Lowering bitrates for a one-off...

Hi,

Does anyone know whether its possible to select songs from the master library and downgrade the quality - putting these new tracks into a new folder whilst the originals remain intact?

The reason I ask is that I'm going on holiday soon and want to get more out of my Nano. Under normal conditions I fill my iPod up with music at 256kbps because I prefer the quality and I update the tracks every few days on my home PC.

However, I'll be away from home for 2weeks and I'm concerned that I won't have enough music to keep me occupied for the duration (it's only a 2Gb Nano), and would be prepared to have a temporary collection of 192kbps or 128kbps tracks so that I can squeeze more on. Then when I return home I can go back to the original setup.

Any thoughts?

First set your prefs to the lower quality you desire. Preferences/Advanced/Importing. AAC-128 is a very good choice but you can go lower of course.
Then just select the tracks and choose Advanced/Convert selection to AAC
Originals will live alongside the new songs.
But if you have originals in a Playlist, the new files won't be added to the same playlist, you'll only see them (both) when you browse the Library.

That's what I wanted to hear - thanks for the reply. I'll give that a test-run tonight.

It would probably be worth setting up a new smart playlist where "Bit Rate is 128" to group the lower rate songs together.
