Deleting songs from Playlists + iPod

Hello all,

I'm interested in getting iTunes to delete songs from the actual hard disk of my iPod when the files/association is deleted in a playlist (regardless of if the song is in another playlist - although a warning about this would be nice). Is there an easy way to do this?

(Win XP, iTunes 7.0.2, iPod 5.5G 80 Gig)

Thanks in advance.

Sync to selected playlist (instead of all songs and playlists). The setting is in the iPod's "Music" tab under where it says "Sync Music". You can make one or more playlists specifically for syncing to the iPod, or you can simply choose from among the ones you already have. When you sync your iPod, only those playlists and the songs in them will be copied to the iPod, and any tracks on the iPod that are not in any of the sync lists any longer will be removed from the iPod.

That might certainly work, but I don't have any playlists on my iTunes. Although honestly it wouldn't be that much of a hardship to use one "syncing" playlist.

Thanks for your reply.

You want songs to be removed from the iPod when you delete them from a playlist, but you don't have any playlists? *boggle*

Anyway, yeah, just make a regular playlist called "Ryan's iPod" or whatever you'd like. Then put all the songs you want to be on your iPod into that list and sync to it. Whenever you add or remove songs to/from the list, those changes will be reflected the next time you sync.

LOL. I don't use iTunes to manage my music - my music drive is all sorted by genre and iTunes doesn't keep that directory structure (and I only use iTunes to load music onto my iPod and/or buy music). So when I load my iPod, I do so through explorer drag&drop into iTunes.

My iPod has plenty of playlists - they're just not mirrored in iTunes.

LOL yourself. You're really locking yourself in by adhering to a strict disc structure. iTunes will have no problems sorting you music by genre and/or the general artist-album convention if you just let go of the last-century folder-filename thinking.
I rarely look at the files on disc now, metadata rules.

Yes, my advice is just give in and let iTunes manage your music. It will store them on the disk in artist/album subfolders, which may not be exactly what you're used to, but as Essin said, there's really no need to go looking in the folders anymore. iTunes will display your music sorted in whatever fashion you please. What little you lose in "top-level" control is more than made up for in power and versatility.

I'll take it under advisement - but I'm not about to put 15,000 songs in one folder. I use my music collection for more than just iTunes and iPod - that's why the first two letters in my name are "DJ" ;)

Thanks for the advice.

-r-One more advice then. If you have a lot of song in a certain view, say a certain genre or a smart playlist or anything, you just select and drag those songs _directly_ from within iTunes to the folder/disc/flashplayer/DVD of your choice. iTunes will suck all songs from the myriad of disc folders and "consolidate" them to the destination. No need to rummage about in Explorer/Finder.
