I think the new sorting options are extremely redundant. There's a whole new ab in the Get Info box to add separate "Sort By..." info...I don't even get the point? On the other hand, Full screen cover flow is amazing!!! It's like Front Row, only better! Totally sweet for us old users without Front Row!
# 2 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Finally! There's a bunch of Windows Vista bug fixes which is good news to me since I'm using Vista as my main operating system. Also, there's an Apple TV tab in the preferences for those of you that didn't notice. :D
They also made the minimize/maximize/close buttons very Vista-like:

Actually, it comes in handy when you have songs, artists, albums, etc. that begin with the definite article "the". That way when you search through long lists you won't have to scroll all the way down to "T" just to view, for example, The Beatles songs.

I can't wrap my head around what the sorting feature actually DOES. Can someone explain it? I don't understand how it's different from just sorting by column headers, and as far as I can tell it doesn't help with that bug where purchased tracks appear in the wrong sort order.
# 6 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I've only had time for a cursory glance at it at this point, but it would seem that it allows items to be sorted/grouped based on something other than what normally appears in a field. For example, if you wanted to sort your artists by last name, but still display them as First + Last.
Aside from the Full-Screen Coverflow, which is the most obvious feature, there are a few other new features that I've noted at first glance...
TV Shows now have a Watched/Unwatched status similar to podcasts. A blue dot appears in the TV Show listing, and a show will be set to "Watched" whenever any portion of it has been viewed. Like podcasts, the actual play count and last played time is not updated until the show it played through to the end.
The "Play Videos" preference (for windowed/full screeen) has been moved to the "Playback" tab in Preferences
The "Shared Name" has been moved from the "Sharing" tab to the "General" tab in preferences.
There is now an "Apple TV" tab in Preferences to tell iTunes whether to look for "Apple TV" devices and display any that are found. Presumably this also goes hand in hand with support for Apple TV under the hood.
Parental Controls now allow ratings to be selected based upon Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States. This is presumably an indicator that movie content will soon be available in these countries, since these ratings are based on the iTunes Store.
I'm sure there are other changes as well, but this is what I've got on a quick glance through it.
# 7 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Wow, this is annoying. For some reason protected (iTunes-purchased) TV shows don't follow the right sort order. For example, I have the whole season of 30 Rock on my iTunes, but only eps 1 & 3 were purchased at the iTunes store. The other episodes are unprotected videos. So here's the order 7.1 lists my 30 Rock episodes in (when sorted by Show or Season):
2.
4.
5. - 16.
1.
3.
And this is a helpful change why?

# 8 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
"The Beatles" are sorted under B already in iTunes 7.0.x
Ah, I guess it already does, as I have found out on my other computer.
Still, it could be useful if one were to have foreign artists that begin with a definite article (example "le" or "el"). I don't have such songs, so I can't test it out between different versions of iTunes.
I am quite pleased that 7.1 allows me to sort my albums properly alphabetically by the word after the definite article since I prefer sorting my library by album. I had a few number of albums that started with "The".
I did have a bit of a problem with foreign album that has to be started with "The", which is due to a personal and artistic reason of mine. Typing the entire album title in the Sort Album field ("THE END" to be exact) corrected the issue. The reason being is that iTunes, at least the U.S. English version, automatically filters out the "The". This would be apparent if the sort field is already filled with gray text.
But like many new features Apple introduces into iTunes, they forget to implement the sorting in the multiple tag editor window. Thus, I am forced to cycle through one song at a time to make any sorting changes.
I have also noticed a new context menu "Apply Sort Field" when right-clicking a song or two. I tried using that but didn't see any changes it applied.
# 9 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Does this update finally fix the issue of locking up when your library's music is located on a drive that isn't immediately available?

I have also noticed a new context menu "Apply Sort Field" when right-clicking a song or two. I tried using that but didn't see any changes it applied. If you define the sort order of one song, you use this menu to apply the same sort order to other songs that match the song, artist, or album, depending on which option you "Apply".
For example, suppose you want to sort all songs by 10,000 Maniacs under "T" rather than "1":
- Pick one song by 10,000 Maniacs and define the Artist sort order as "Ten Thousand Maniacs".
- When you save that change, the song will move into the "T" section of your library if it is sorted by Artist name.
- While that song is still highlighted, right-click and select "Apply Sort Field --> Same Artist". You'll get a warning message, and if you select OK then all songs by 10,000 Maniacs will be moved to the "T" section of your library. They will still appear as 10,000 Maniacs, but they will be sorted as though they were named Ten Thousand Maniacs.
The point is, this feature seems to allow mass updating of sort order as long as you have one song that has been changed.
# 11 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I like the new sorting. Now I can sort on any-crazy-thing without changing the presentation of the "real" info. Like, I can use "Winter, Edgar" and "Winter, Johnny" to get the bros to list together, but still read right. (It's a small PITA to adapt song names -- The Logical Song now sorts as Logical Song -- but it seems worth it for the new flexibility [I'll let you know after I fix just under 100 songs ;-].)
PLUS, these fields appear as smart list criteria, so there's now more ways to make smart lists ;-) PLUS, the iPod seems to recognize these fields, so if I want my iPod to sort ...Limelight, The Logical Song, Look at Granny Run... while my iTunes sorts ...The Life, The Logical Song, The Lowdown... I can have that, too.
(Yay! These new bits are AppleScript-able, too)

Anyone know if 7.1 fixes the bug where it would fill your ipod up with podcasts that you have already listened to? (even though they don't appear in the podcast listing on your ipod, they were in the song lists).
# 13 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
So with all these sorting options, will it finally enable users to sort their music in the Artist/Chronogical order of albums instead of the Artist/Alphabetical order of albums?
I hope so.
# 14 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
is this sorting available on the iPod, i think not since there wasnt an ipod update.. once again i wish stuff was passed to the iPod, that way they could make more sense..the same thing happened with album artists, i wish i could sort it on the iPod by Album Artist instead of the Artist Field.

# 15 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Either I can't figure this junk out, or the new format is bloody abysmal for TV shows. Before 7.1, episodes were clearly and neatly organized by episode number, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to get them to be properly ordered outside of alphabetical (Which for shows like Heroes, is utterly useless). The new "sorting" tab nonsense isn't helping matters on it (As it doesn't give an episode number option in there). Anyone got any advice on how to make this not look like a giant cluster-screw? Or should I just uninstall and reinstall an older version?
# 16 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Make sure you are sorting by the "show" column. If it's not available, goto View->options and make sure that is checked.
If you are sorting by the view column, can you include a small screen shot?
# 17 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
This is really annoying. I have downloaded, installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled it twice now, and still it won't work. When I try to open iTunes, the hourglass shows up and it pretends like it's going to open for a few seconds, then...nothing. I can't figure out what's wrong!
Very frustrating!
Any ideas?

Also, over on the Apple.com forums, some are reporting (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=878420&tstart=15) that it still crashes.

Yes!!! Finally...
When you click at the "album" column, the title changes to "album by artist", when you click it again, it changes to "album by year", and it sorts accordingly. Now, if you want to change the sorting order (ascending or descending), you have to click at the little triangle, since clicking at the title applies the above mentioned new sorts.
Coverfolow is nice but, it's still a memory hog; after browsing all my album art (about 4K songs) with coverflow, which caches all the covers I think, jacks up the memory usage to 400MB. And it doesn't decrease a byte when you minimize iTunes' windows to system tray.

# 20 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I dont get the point for these sort fields. iTunes could simply have created an option in "Preferences" where I decided whether to ignore "The" in "The Beatles" or not.

As a general rule, programs never shrink. The only way to fully free the memory is to quit and restart. Of course, with a modern OS, that chunk of memory will be written to disk, so it won't do that much harm.

You can already do this in iTunes (click "Album" to cycle between "Album", "Album by Artist" (alphabetical by artist), and "Album by Year" (chronological by artist).

My experience, running Vista Ultimate:
-Physical media button functionality (play, pause, etc.) on keyboard is "improved" - it works when other apps are active. But it has a very slow response time, and broke my "mute" button as now each press of the button is seen and handled by *both* Windows and iTunes, muting and unmuting the sound in mere milliseconds. This bug should have been caught in production, Apple is ridiculous to not take care of something so obvious
-Coverflow works GREAT in fullscreen, with very little perceived delay. I can't wait to try this out in party shuffle mode.
-Videos handle better
-I had to reactivate my machine for iTunes. I think that this physical machine accounts for three separate iTunes authorizations. Grr.
-SOMETHING about this version of iTunes is a real CPU hog compared to 7.0.1. - regular playback pegs my Core Duo chip to about 14% usage. I'm looking at the media button changes, but who knows?
So overall, it takes care of the worst of the Vista compatibility issues, but I would rate it at beta-quality, at best. I am a bit suspicious that this is a strategic ploy for Apple to get a little gung-ho at Vista's expense by creating little "artificial shortcomings" to Vista instead of putting out release-quality software the first time.

Another important thing is security update in QT. Since iTunes usually comes packed with QT, it was important to release this update. I was getting a "buffer overrun" message for the last three days which could make a hacker run arbitrary code on my machine. I am glad about the new release.
# 26 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Is there a way to make the mouse pointer fade away after a few seconds on Full screen Coverflow? Whilst it looks amazing the old white pointer looks out of place and even if you drag it to a corner it still pokes it's little head up occasionally.

Thanks for the info re: Vista. I'm getting a new PC next week (with Vista) and was a bit worried about iTunes not working properly with it.
The thread on the Apple forum doesn't make for good reading, maybe I'll have to keep using my laptop (Windows XP) or just hold off installing iTunes on my Vista machine until it's all sorted out.

I never said it was officially compatible with Vista. All I said was that the 7.1 release does have a bunch of Vista bug fixes. I'm sure there are still bugs that haven't been fixed.

Agreed. It's nice to have new sorting options in iTunes, but I'd prefer to have the confusing and extremely limited sorting on the iPod updated. Why the heck can't we sort (and browse) playlists by Artist? And some of my albums/playlists seem to end up in completely random order on the iPod, which is strange.

Actually, Anapod is worse right now. I own that, too, and there is a problem with how Vista sans-iTunes unmounts iPods- when I use Anapod, I can only play the first 30 seconds or so of each song. Something on the iPod gets corrupted, as is documented by Apple support.
There are no iPod-related bugs that I know of with iTunes 7.1.
# 36 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I think the new sort addition is fantastic. The main benefit for me is specific for a half-dozen of my favourite bands which I have many albums including bootlegs. Usually all the albums would be ordered by name with official and bootlegs mixed together. BUT now I can reorder the albums with the official ones first (in chronological order) then by bootleg date (in chronological order) this is especially handy when viewing on the iPod.
For example:
For any Stripes fans out there, you can see I have ordered the official albums by release date: :)

But, this new sorting features do NOT carry over to the iPod, right, it's just useable in iTunes? Can anyone verify this?
And I second the idea to have more submenu options in playlists... It would be an easy addition, just have an option box that you can check (or yes/no on the iPod itself in the settings menu) to have an artists submenu appear after selecting a playlist. Artist, Album, Genre, all of these you could have the independant option of appearing as a playlist submenu this way... Also the use of playlist folders on the iPod just like in iTunes would be a welcome addition!!
Maybe it will happen, if we get enough people to ask for these features at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
It's worth a try...

Yes it carries over to the iPod!
Wow, that is fantastic news indeed!!!
Also, ILoveSarburst!, great tip on the album organization, that will work perfectly with my Pearl Jam collection!! Seriously, just this past weekend, I was trying to think of ways to clean it up some, and now with this new iTunes release, I can use the same method you posted and do exactly what I was hoping for!
Now if we could just get the option to have submenus and folders in playlists!!!
Customizable background/wallpapper (like the Vision M has) would be great as well, but I don't see that happening, not until the iPhone at least, and I don't see there ever being a firmware release to bring that or cover flow view to the current iPods. Would love for Apple to prove me wrong there though!

One new feature I noticed today was that when you highlight a set of songs to drag into an existing playlist, where before you would see the + sign, now you also see a red circle with the number of tracks you are adding.

I tried as you suggested, and this is the result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/0bsessions/iTunes2.jpg
As you can see, it subsequently orders the episode by season. This can be resolved by sorting by track number instead, but then we get this issue:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/0bsessions/iTunes3.jpg
It groups each #1,2, etc, thus mixing seasons. I've yet to figure out an easy way of managing this. It's enough of a pain to begin with, but since it carries over to my iPod, now it's completely screwed the sorting on my iPod. Any advice? At the moment, I'm thinking just uninstall iTunes, reinstall the previous version and just start over, as this is bloody annoying.

Changing the sort artist doesn't seem to do anything for me. I have an album called Side Trax by a band called Ministry. It has a bunch of tracks from Ministry side projects. OK I've installed 7.1 in Vista, and so far so good (knock on wood). One thing I've noticed, though, is this:
I'm re-importing my library from backup CDs I made. I didn't make them via iTunes backup; they're just data CDs of the actual mp3 files.
So I'm importing them into the Library (via 'Add folder to Library'), and I have it set to copy all the music files into the iTunes folder.
Thing is, a couple of them aren't showing up in the Library. They've been copied into the iTunes folder all right, but they don't show up in iTunes.
Anyone else have this problem? Have suggestions?

hey obsessions!
I was having the same problems but then I looked carefully at all the tags in the shows. For some inexplicable reason in the video tab the Episode ID field is all messed up. If you follow the rules that it has created (for example Battlestar Galactica seems to be T27(episode number). Scrubs is the more understandable 6(episode number). I fiddled around with the numbers to make these a sequence and then the episodes were in order. I know this is a lot of work and we SHOULDN'T have to deal with this, but that worked for me.

I'm getting my Vista PC tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out then :) I'll let you know if the machine blows up or anything.

My Windows XP machine, after updating, no longer sees any AirTunes speakers. Turning the preference on and off does nothing, the selection box in the bottom right corner is gone. I can use the Airport Utility from the PC to restart the Airport Expresses, and I can see other shares on my network, just no AirTunes. I've only seen one other post about this. Wonder what the fix is?

I upgraded to 7.1 this morning and now I'm getting the lovely 'unsupported display' when coming back from a locked or screen saver mode. I am running dual monitors and have it on the non-primary monitor just as I did before the upgrade, but it's still crashing. Anyone have a fix for this?
# 60 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I've updated my iTunes on two Windows systems with pretty identical libraries and noticed a few problems:
For some albums, the album art gets deleted and does not show up in coverflow or the now playing window. From what I can see, there is no rhyme or reason behind the glitch. (Both XP and Vista)
For some songs and some whole albums, the total track number is lost (for example, rather than being labeled "track 3 of 12," it now simply becomes "track 3). I've also noticed that this particular bug is not necessarily connected with the previous problem. (Both XP and Vista)
Some soundtracks have the album artist name changed to either "B.S.O." or "soundtrack" when the original album artist tag was either an individual artist/band or labeled various artists. (Both XP and Vista)
A permissions problem pops up from time to time stating that the user does not have permission to write to the library and that changes cannot be saved. This seems to pop up only when lots of updates are made to the library including fixes for the aforementioned problems, but doesn't seem to happen when only a few updates are made. (Vista only; did not attempt in XP)
From what I can tell, if you manually go back and put the album art back in, fix the track numbers, and fix the album artist tags, the changes seem to take hold.
I suspect something might have gone wrong when after installing 7.1, when the new version of iTunes does its "updating library" before starting for the first time, something gets lost or messed up in the translating or processing. I originally thought it was a Vista problem, but when I checked my XP machine at work, the identical problems cropped up on the identical files.
I also thought there might be some songs missing, but I have no proof of something being there before 7.1 and not after 7.1. The suspect songs might have never been ripped from my CDs, so I'm loathe to report it as a verifiable problem. All songs, however, appear to be in their correct folders and accounted for as far as iTunes is concerned.
One final note ... I had thought that iTunes would automatically delete an empty folder if it moved music out of it. For example, if you changed the label of an artist from "Dave Matthews Band" to "The Dave Matthews Band," then iTunes would create a new folder for the latter and delete the former. (Again, I never went back to check to see if this was the case, so it could be something the program has never done all along.) I thought that with the new sorting option, I could now correctly update an album from "Diary of Alicia Keys" to "The Diary of Alicia Keys," with a new folder for the latter and deletion of the former. Interestingly enough, iTunes does not delete the old folder, even though there is no longer anything in it.
I've started to repair my library and it shouldn't take too terribly long, but I thought I'd report some of the issues I've encountered thus far.

Hey I observed that the new sorting function gets passed on to iPod unlike what is mentioned elsewhere in the posts.
I do not agree with the fact that iTunes would delete the empty folder in earlier versions. I believe that its not a problem with the code but the fact that the OS (windows xp in my case) locks the folder for some reasons making it difficult for iTunes to delete the folder.
# 63 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Why not just allow multiple column sorts? then I can tell it to sort by Artist first, then album, then track?
seems like a rather obvious feature.

Though I would love to see a multiple comlumn sort that I could say first sort here, then sort here, the selection of "album by artist" sorts exactly as you suggest: First alphabetically by artist, then alphabetically by album, then by track number. the "album by year" does the same thing but instead of alphabetically by album goes chronologically.
But I would love a multi column sort... Could be powerful for different levels of organization.

That's why I didn't note it as an actual problem in my earlier post, more of an observation. I guess in Windows users will have to go back in eventually and delete the old folder manually.

My scrollbar in Coverflow view has always been blurry, until I adjust the horizontal bar - then it sharpens up. Now with full screen Coverflow, the scrollbar and volume slider are both blurry as hell. Can anything be done?
I am running iTunes on both a Mac and PC. On my Vista PC it's just fine. It only happens on my Mac mini.
# 67 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Why can't apple fix the bugs first before updating the features, i remember when i got my first iPod and could get itunes 4.5 to run perfectly on a computer with minimum specs. Now itunes is the slowest program i have installed and uses about 256 mb, out of the 3 gigs i have on my comp. I remember when they would update itunes from say 4.5 to 4.6 to 4.7, without adding in a boatload of somewhat useless features and bugs. And is it a conspiracy or does apple really think that by making itunes run poorly on vista it will make me switch to os x. all it does is make me glad that i only have to deal with buggy apple software to update my iPod.
# 68 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
hey obsessions!
Maybe it is just me, so if i have this problem wrong, sorry... but I believe that the problem that Obsessions describes is not solved by what you say. Well it is solved, but you lose use of the Episode ID field.
The Episode ID field is usually used for the title of the show... ie in Seinfield Season 7 EP 5 is titled "The Hot tub" and Season 7 Episode 6 is "the Soup Nazi" etc....
So, the way apple screwed it all up, there is no way to maintain the show title (i.e. "the Soup Nazi") and still sort it in order.. because it will sort based on "the Soup Nazi" rather than the actual episode number.

The episode ID does not = Episode title. It also doesn't always = episode number. Episode ID is a number assigned to episodes by the studio/production staff.
See the article about iTunes guide to videos for information about this field.
It shouldn't be a major sort criteria, but some reports I am getting seem to suggest that in 7.1 this is a new problem bug that it is taken into account...
# 70 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Well, there's never an end to bugs; if you waited on adding features until all bugs were fixed, you'd never add any features ;-)
The "important" new features in this release are for Apple TV; given AppleTV's imminent release and Apple's focus as a hardware company, this makes all kinds of sense. (Also, there's been a huge amount of bug cleanup in Mac QuickTime, another key Apple technology in support of hardware.)
Since iPods respond to the "new" Sort fields with no iPod update, I think it's more likely that some of these "new" features in 7.1 have actually been around for awhile...they just got held back from prior releases; p'bly in favor of bug-fixes and maintaining code stability (i.e. introduce potential bugs slowly).
Most current users are on XP, and the great majority have no bad problems; asking them to DL a bug-fix release (and paying for it) without adding a couple of features isn't going to be happifying. Vista's new; give it time (got perfect drivers yet? ;-)

# 72 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
anyone find a fix for the tv show sorting order?
The few people I worked with had something in Episode ID, that to me, seems to be causing the issue. If this fits with your situation, clear the episode ID (it's not important as long as you have Name, Show, Season, and Episode NUMBER filled), so clear out your episode ID for all your shows and see if the sort fixes.
Make sure you are sorting by "show" column. Not sure if this is the fix, as no one I have worked with has responded back, but a previous post in this thread sounds to support my thoughts on this.
See wldkt619's post a few posts up. It sounds as if 7.1 might use episode ID as a sort criteria wrongly. Episode ID is not important as it's just a number assigned by the production/director to IDs. Episode ID does not have to equal episode name, episode number, or anything like that. I leave my episode IDs blank currently.
# 73 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
For the record, I've had no problems whatsoever with sort order of any of my TV Shows, and I fill in both the Episode ID (from tv.com) and the Episode Number (sequential). I also tend to populate the track number field as well though (or more to the point, I have an Applescript that does that for me for my self-ripped content).
The important thing to note as well is that iTunes will only sort on the actual Episode ID if the Episode Number is left blank (and will sort alphabetically if both are left blank). The confusing thing about this, however, is that even clicking on the Episode ID column will not sort by the Episode ID, but will still sort by the Episode Number (if present). This will visually make the episodes seem out of order, since they're not sorted based on the information in that column that you're sorting on (the "Episode IDs" may be out of sequence).
My suggestion for those having sorting issues is to try removing and re-entering the Episode Number information, in case perhaps it has fallen out of sync after the database conversion (since iTunes 7.1 does do a number of underlying conversions for the new sorting capabilities, which could obviously have this effect).
For Mac users, a simple Applescript could be used to just retag the shows (basically extract the Episode Number and then re-apply it to the selected tracks). If anybody's interested, I can probably throw a snippet of AS code together and post it in here.
For more info, check out our Complete Guide to Managing iTunes Videos (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-complete-guide-to-managing-itunes-videos/). I checked this against iTunes 7.1 after it was released, and as far as I've been able to tell, the information in there continues to apply under normal conditions (obviously isolated bugs and database corruption issues aside).
# 74 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Well **** me sideways! It does? Really?
Apple do seem to get it right once in a while.
Don't speak too soon... there still seems to be an issue to work out on the iPod as a result of this new sorting feature. The semi-transparent "letter" display that pops up when you scroll quickly through your library on the iPod doesn't appear to interpret the new sort names as their proper letter. The first time I plugged in my iPod after upgrading to 7.1, iTunes apparently decided to take the liberty of modifying all my album names starting with "The" so they'd be sorted without the "The" included. That in itself isn't a big issue... though I was accustomed to those albums being under "T", I can always get used to it this way.
However, what is annoying is that as I scroll through using that pop-up letter box thing, the letter "T" appears far too often... in between most of the other letters as I scroll down through the album names. Apparently, that display still uses the first letter of whatever album is currently at the top of your iPod's screen... so, for example, when an album starting with "The" is listed with the A's/R's/etc. as a result of the new sort, you're going to get a "T" showing up sometimes as you scroll. I imagine it would happen with any letter, but T is the one I've noticed on mine, since so many albums start with "The".
# 75 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I've noticed this as well, and your description of the issue seems to be accurate.
In actuality, from my previous testing it would appear that the iPod does not actually do any sorting at all on it's own -- rather the sort order is actually determined by iTunes when the music is transferred onto the iPod, which is why it continues to work in iTunes 7.1, despite the lack of iPod firmware updates.
# 76 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE

Unfortunately the browse by artist doesn't conform exactly to the sort-by-artist list.
For example, I arranged for Derek And The Dominos to appear with Eric Clapton, and did the same with the BB King & Eric Clapton album and the JJ Cale & Eric Clapton album, so I get a true chronological flow when it comes to album-by-artist.
This means that when I use browse, though, the following shows up:
Eric Clapton
BB King & Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton
JJ Cale & Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton
Derek & The Dominos*
*still not sure why this shows up after the rest on browse - it shows up fine otherwise...
It would be nice if we could have a "show sort artist when browsing" option so that these all showed up as Eric Clapton.

# 79 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Has anyone identified playcount discrepencies since the update? I just noticed that some of my songs have jumped up by hundreds in playcount while other more popular songs have lost significant plays...
Not sure if this directly related to the update, or other corruptions from hard drive crashes gone by. I admit I haven't been paying as much attention to my playcounts as I once did, but I couldn't help but notice that the Sonny and Cher Song I downloaded just two months ago shot up to 88 plays. Yes I've listened to it, but not THAT much.
My last.fm account isn't a good shot for my overall plays, but comparing my current situation to my musicmobs account shows major discrepency, even though it's about four months old in data... I mean if a song wasn't even registering as being played 49 times in October but all the sudden is up to 130 plays in march? That's an aweful lot of plays for even that time, especially on a set of songs I haven't payed that much attention to in my knowledge.
I'll have to check my clone when I get home, but I may have updated my clone shortly after the iTunes update... I have to remember to take my own advice and backup my .itl and .xml files before an iTunes update...

Any chance the new software can do this?

# 83 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
I see Apple finally added a "Release Date" column as well as others, mostly to add columns for the new Sort tags into playlists. The Release Date column is handy for sorting smart playlists full of podcasts so they are sorted in chronological order.
They also fixed a bug that kept the Downloading section up and spinning when a podcast download was canceled.
I also find iTunes video play back is a little better, it still uses more CPU's than it should but I can now play full screen video from my iBook when connected to my 19" LCD monitor. I use Screen Spanning Doctor to use my iBook and my 19" LCD monitor in screen spanning mode since it can only do mirror mode by default. Before the upgrade the video would get all messed up on the 19" monitor when it was any bigger than double size. The down fall is that when I set iTunes to full screen on the monitor it also blacks out the laptops monitor as well. This also happens when using Cover Flow in full screen mode as well making the dual monitor set up kind of useless.
It also looks like they have done some improvements to the TV Show tagging. It looks like it is no longer necessary to enter the shows name under the Artists field in the Info tab for the TV Show to show up in the iPod synchronization tab in iTunes.

I don't think this is a feature you can turn on and off.
You may be able to try to go into the sorting pane and change the sort album name to The xxx specifically. perhaps if it is inputted as such there it won't ignore the "the"?
Not sure, and would likely be a thing to endure as you can't mass edit that pane...

You are probably clicking just right to cause this to open the editing of the field inline instead of playing the song. Try to double click a little bit off of the name field, or attempt to doubleclick faster. Usually opening up inline editing takes slow distinct clicks.

Nope. Even if I click just once on the song title, it opens the edit field. Two fast clicks also opens the edit field. When I click on another song from a different album, the album artwork in the bottom left corner will change to the new album artwork, but the song will not play.
I've been doing the 'click on song title' to play thing for years on itunes, so I would know if it suddenly doesn't do what it used to do, so this a definitely a new bug in 7.1.
If I use my keyboard controls for 'next song', 'previous song', etc, the songs will play and switch like normal, but not by manually mousing over the title and clicking on it. I just get the edit field.

Could the problem have something to do with artwork? I notice that when I click on a song or album that I have not added artwork, the song plays fine by clicking on the title. If the album has artwork, the song will not play when I click the title. Is there any way to turn off 'artwork' for all albums?
...I've also noticed that if the artwork file that you have added to your album is very small in size, say no more than 10-50 mb, the song will play fine when you click it. If you use a large jpeg file, it locks up the song and it will not play. THIS WAS NEVER A PROBLEM IN 7.0!

I love 7.1. When I installed the first release of 7 about 700 of my songs wouldn't play and it kept searching for gapless playback info on them. Probably a fault with some part of the tags indicating song length, they played fine in other apps.
Now with 7.1 they are playing again and no searching for gapless info.
Big thumbs up from me then. :-)

Very interesting. This could come in useful for artists who release more than one album in a year, and/or various other tracks.
But I don't see a way to edit the info. It seems to be displaying info for tracks purchased on iTunes only, and not let me input info for albums I ripped myself. I hope this functionality is enabled soon.

# 96 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
iTunes randomly added block-characters to the end of my tags :o Does anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?Yeah, I've had that problem before. It stems from the fact that Apple doesn't bother to comply with ID3v2 tag standards, instead using its own, slightly-incompatible ID3v2 variation.
Because of this, if you tag your songs with a utility that actually does use the proper ID3v2 standard then iTunes sees a "block" character at the end of every field. In my case, I was using the excellent foobar 2000 to tag my files when I saw this issue crop up (maybe 6 months ago?).
There were a few heated forum threads about this (on HydrogenAudio, I think) -- basically, fb2k's author rightly felt he shouldn't have to break his app's tag compliance just because Apple can't be bothered to fix tag handling in iTunes, but iTunes users couldn't get around the fact they were getting screwed by the issue, regardless of whose fault it was.
A compromise was reached: on the most recent version(s) of foobar 2000 (I'm using v0.9.4 beta 1) there's now an option in File->Preferences->Advanced called "ID3v2 Writer Compatibility Mode". The author couldn't help getting one last dig in with his description: "non-specification-compliant, slow, activates workarounds for common bugs in other software." lol
So in the case of foobar 2000 you'll have to get the latest version, activate compatibility mode, drag your affected files in, select all, then do a Right-Click->Tagging->Rewrite File Tags. *Then* you'll have to do a get info on each affected file in iTunes, so it notices the tags have changed. If you do a get info on all the affected tracks at once I believe only the first song will be fixed... you have to get info the first song, then "next, next, next" through the rest of the songs. BTW, all these tracks will be recopied to your iPod on your next sync. Thank you, Apple!
If you're using another tool to tag with you'll have to either use foobar 2000 to fix the issue, investigate whether your tool's author has implemented a workaround, or force your files to use only ID3v1 tags (ick!) -- keeping in mind that this will truncate long song names, album names, etc., and will potentially delete existing album art (foobar2000, btw, keeps the album art intact when it rewrites the tags).
In my case (thankfully) only a few of my newest albums were affected by the "phantom square" issue, so the inconvenience was minor.

# 97 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Beh...I have nearly 10.000 mp3's and I am not pressing "get info" 10.000 times...btw the option is in foobar2000 0.9.1 also.
As I'm only using iTunes for my iPod, I didn't mind about the blocks showing up, but the worst part is that if I now sync my iPod, I get 2 artists:
-Red Hot Chili Peppers
-Red Hot Chili Peppers
They point to exactly the same albums, they look 100% the same but (I think...) they are listed twice because iTunes has 2 artists: Red Hot Chili Peppers and Red Hot Chili Peppers []. So even though the iPod doesn't see the difference even in its internal database, the same artists/genres/etc. still list twice sometimes...
Now looking for software to replace iTunes...
# 98 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Beh...I have nearly 10.000 mp3's and I am not pressing "get info" 10.000 times...Well, if most of your tracks have this issue I'd recommend an alternative method... select all of your songs in iTunes, hit delete and choose the "Keep Files" option, use foobar to rewrite all your tags, then re-import your tracks into iTunes.
If you've already put alot of time into rating your tracks in iTunes there's an app that lets you store your iTunes ratings and other such data into your files' ID3 tags, and will then reload that stored data after you re-import. Was just looking at this last week, will have to figure out what the app's name is.
the worst part is that if I now sync my iPod, I get 2 artists:
-Red Hot Chili Peppers
-Red Hot Chili Peppers
I think what's happening is that iTunes *does* see "Red Hot Chili Peppers" and "Red Hot Chili Peppers[]" as different artists, but the iPod doesn't have the ability to display that square character as a square, so it displays a blank. So fixing your tag issue would fix this, too.

If you've already put alot of time into rating your tracks in iTunes there's an app that lets you store your iTunes ratings and other such data into your files' ID3 tags, and will then reload that stored data after you re-import.Found the utility I mentioned: iRating (http://cp194838-a.landg1.lb.home.nl)

I just update itunes 2 days ago. No issues to speak of yet. My nano and full size 40gb ipod sync fine at the same time. Hopefully, things will remain smooth.

Hey folks,
I just upgraded to iTunes 7.1 but now look at my library:
http://i13.tinypic.com/33wy0jp.gif (http://i17.tinypic.com/2upenq1.jpg)
iTunes randomly added block-characters to the end of my tags :o Does anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance...
Dougs Scripts has one to remove a certain number of characters from the front or rear of a files name, artist, album etc.

Well, if most of your tracks have this issue I'd recommend an alternative method... select all of your songs in iTunes, hit delete and choose the "Keep Files" option, use foobar to rewrite all your tags, then re-import your tracks into iTunes.
If you've already put alot of time into rating your tracks in iTunes there's an app that lets you store your iTunes ratings and other such data into your files' ID3 tags, and will then reload that stored data after you re-import. Was just looking at this last week, will have to figure out what the app's name is.
I think what's happening is that iTunes *does* see "Red Hot Chili Peppers" and "Red Hot Chili Peppers[]" as different artists, but the iPod doesn't have the ability to display that square character as a square, so it displays a blank. So fixing your tag issue would fix this, too.
Problem is that since I editted some tags in iTunes, Foobar doen not recongnize its tags at all anymore (other tagging utils do). I do have a backup of my music and I am gonna put that back, but I'll be @#$%$# if I ever let iTunes touch any of my music again. I am now looking for another way to fill my iPod besides iTunes.
About the iPod: iTunes might see both "Red Hot Chili Peppers" as seperate, the iPod does not since no matter which one of the two I click it returns all of the albums by them; those tagged with "Red Hot Chili Peppers" and those with "Red Hot Chili Peppers[]"...
Anyway I'm thinking about getting Anapod Explorer...iTunes has, after numerous releases that got worse with every one of them, finally f*cked it up badly enough for me to switch...stupid program.
# 103 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Very interesting. This could come in useful for artists who release more than one album in a year, and/or various other tracks.
But I don't see a way to edit the info. It seems to be displaying info for tracks purchased on iTunes only, and not let me input info for albums I ripped myself. I hope this functionality is enabled soon.
Unfortunately I have only seen this info available for Podcasts that are subscribe to through iTunes.

I am having a problem with 7.1. I can play videos fine but when I double click a song it acts like it's going to start but I get a "Send Error Report" pop-up and iTunes closes. I am using Windows XP Pro and I did not have this problem with 7.0.2 right before installing 7.1. Any ideas?
I am having the exact same problem!!! I am running XP pro and itunes 7.1. I just got my30Gb video ipod this weekend. I used itunes to import about 600 songs from cds. It worked pretty well, but it sure did eat up my resources!!! So I synched up to the ipod, no problems! Then I downloaded a free tv show, no problem there. Now I am going into itunes to search for music. I found a track I might want to buy, so I double click on it, I get the dreaded iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close message. What's the deal? Anyone have a fix for this?

I just installed iTunes 7.1, restarted, it got about 3/4 through updating my music library when iTunes locked up (not responding + 50% Cpu). I have restarted and opened itunes several times and it always crashes.
Any Ideas?

I am hoping for a little help from the knowledgeable forum members. I updated to the latest version of iTunes and now my iPod/iTunes will not sync with my photo library in Elements 3.0. It worked fine until now and it is giving me an unknown error (-50) whatever that means. I have tried running the repair option on installation and I have tried reinstalling iTunes without any luck. Elements 3.0 is running fine. Any ideas

Today my itunes started to freeze up. It would be playing a song, and then would not react to anything, including shutting down. I had to use process explorer to shut it down. And it will also not start up again.

Hi im new to this website but heard its the best.
Anyway I installed itunes 7.1.0.59 on the day it was released on my pc which is running Vista home prem. I did a windows update tonight and since then i've had problem after problem.
Here is a pic of the updates that were installed by windows.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/argoos/updates.jpg
The problems i get dont happen straight away but just while im using itunes. The menu buttons in top left hand corner turn into white blocks then all the fonts change and all the styling goes funny. Apple state on their website that this can be fixed by resizing the window size, well when doing that itunes just disappears but is still running etc.
I've unstalled itunes and delete all files in relation to itunes and installed again and i still get the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Hope this isn't going to be a on going problem with windows and itunes its very annoying.
Also another thing that i've spotted, whats with all the temp files in the mymusic/itunes folder..
Any feedback will be fantastic

Does this release resolve the Windows bug that causes (for many people, but not all) the CPU to be pegged while iTunes is downloading podcasts or other things?

It would be nice if we could have a "show sort artist when browsing" option so that these all showed up as Eric Clapton.
same happened to me with George Michael and Wham! So I changed the sort artist of Wham! to "George Michael/Wham!" from just "George Michael" and i dont get similar problems

But then the Wham stuff would show up after the GM stuff, right? I'm thinking that in cases like GM/Wham, Paul McCartney/Wings, Prince/And The Revolution etc. that it would make sense to have the albums appear chronologically under the 'core artist', but I'd still like the album artist to appear true to the original release.

Hey all,
A post put online by ILoveStarburst in this thread explained wonderfully how to use the new "sort album" feature to put albums in the right order. It worked perfectly, both on iTunes and on the iPod. However, since installing 7.1.1, this no longer works on the iPod. Anyone else experiencing this?

yeah 7.1.1.5 seems stupid. I notice that when i right click and see options under "Apply Sort field" there is only one item "All matching fields" unlike the version just before.

Unless I state that the sort artist for Wham! is "George Michael/Wham!" instead of just "George Michael" it shows up as
George Michael >
Wham! >

I am seriously fed up with the results of this recent "upgrade". It has made my music videos unwatchable in iTunes. There is so much jumping of the video stream its farcical.
I've tried the various suggested "fixes" on the Apple support site but all have been useless.
Any suggestions other than rolling back to the previous version?
# 116 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
The Podcast Sync options now work as intended with an additional new option. Sync All still syncs all episodes and Most Recent will sync the latest episodes regardless of playcount.
Sync most recent unplayed will sync all episodes with a playcount of 0. This option used to remove podcasts that have been played but not all the way through, they now must have a playcount of 1 or more. Partially played episodes will remain till the playcount increases to 1 or more.
The new option is to sync the most recent new, this works the way most recent unplayed episodes used to. With this option set any partial played episode, with the blue dot removed, will be removed from the iPod.
I still leave mine set to sync all episodes.

Thanks for the report Sparkee. This is good news. I'll have to check it out when I get my iBook back from repairs... The hard drive finally went into it's final death throws... The finder would have to crash as I am trying to put some finishes touches on a grant proposal due on Monday... I guess on the bright side it will come back with double the hard drive space and a superdrive in place of it's old Combo drive. All for $340 bucks shipping and labor included!
Typing this from my wife's Dell Laptop... I feel dirty ;)
# 118 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
Why the hell doesn't Apple simply publish a frackin list of the updates so we users can make an informed decision as to whether updating is worth the risk?
I mean, as often as they update iTunes, I'm not downloading every single freakin one...

My big issue is that iTunes takes ages to do anything video-related (e.g. editing info and playback).
I'm running Windows Vista, maybe that's the reason?

Yeah, my video's still screwed up, too, even with the new iTunes release. Skips like a streaming video circa 1996. Even if you try to open it in Quck Time by itself - it must be a Quick Time compatibility thing.
# 123 Re: iTunes 7.1 released: Comments & Discussion HERE
i know this might sound out of place but you should try to download the new version of boot camp. it should fix your problem. I always had sound problems with itunes and windows vista even after the new itunes that came out to fix the skipping issues. But now with the new and updated drivers of Boot Camp 1.2 i have no more problems with the sound it's just flawless. So i think the video streaming should be fix up also now. Well try this out and let me know( apple remote works now :D )

Everyday I ask myself why I bought and continue to stick with Apple. Their so-called updates are always atrocious, embarrassing even. :(

I've sorted all my music, and it took ages... and I hate that it didn't transfer to my iPod.

I've had a few mysteriously missing songs since using this iTunes, and I mean its actually deleting songs off my computer after I've sat there and watch them rip, then listened to them on iTunes. After I synced they deleted. It was a store bought CD by the way.
Other than that I'm happy that its a lot less RAM hungry and that it has full screen cd art display.

IMHO, this hardly sounds like a fair trade, ya know?

I've finally lost patience with Apple and switched to Anapod Explorer to manage my iPod. It's fully Vista-compatible, which is more than I can say about iTunes despite Apple releasing TWO updates AFTER Vista had been released.
The way Apple have handled Windows Vista has been shambolic.

The latest update gives a slight improvement in video performance but music videos are still skipping around pretty badly on my machine running XP2.
