Copy music from Shuffle to a new computer?

I need help with my shuffle. I have all my music on my shuffle from my old computer which is dead and buried. My current iTunes library wont copy the music from it of course. The only option it gives me is to erase all the music and connect it to my new library and start over. My computer wont even recognize the iPod until I do this. I've even downloaded software to try to get the music out, but it looks like these programs only work with the iPods that have a display, not the shuffle. The songs are in there, there must be a way right?

You need the iPod to be enabled for disk mode. Then you can use that 3rd party software to copy the music from the iPod onto your new computer.

If your Shuffle isn't already enabled for disk mode I'm not sure how you would do this without the computer you normally used sync the iPod. I know that with iPod nanos, iPod minis, iPod photos and iPod videos you can force it by toggle hold switch on then off > hold menu and select button until Apple logo appears > then hold the select and play/pause buttons until disk mode screen appears but I don't think there is a way to do this with the Shuffles.

Exactly, I don't remember if that 'Enable for disk' box was checked or not. Of course I can't check now because my computer ignores the iPod until I associate it with my new library, which erases everything on the iPod! There's a lot of software out there, but it takes time to download and then the ones that I've downloaded don't work. Please help, someone? Anyone?

If you are running Windows, there IS a way to do it as long as you don't have the option checked to start iTunes when you connect the shuffle. If so, then make sure iTunes is not running, and connect the shuffle...it should then show up under My Computer as a removable drive. Make sure your folder options are set so you can see hidden files and folders, the you can navigate to the music folder on the shuffle. Drag and copy this folder to your PC. At this point you should right-click on the copy of the folder on the PC and uncheck the Read Only check box. ejct and disconnect the shuffle, launch iTunes and go to File/Add Folder To Library and select the folder that you copied to the PC.

only if the iPod is set to "Enable Disk Mode" will it show up in the "My Computer". Which is the same problem with why she can't use a 3rd party iPod manager, need disk mode enabled.

NOT TRUE! The iPod WILL show up until iTunes runs. Try it.

ok, my shuffle doesn't have disk mode enabled so I'll try that today when I get home from work.

It seems to work with any iPod using a PC. As long as iTunes does not launch when you connect the iPod, it shows up. As soon as iTunes runs, it disappears.

The folder that contains the music will be a hidden folder. Once you find it, the music files will be divided between several sub-folders. All the file names on the iPod are shortened to a 4-digit name. By copying all of it to the PC and adding it through iTunes, the file names and file structure will be fixed, assuming that you have iTunes set to copy files to your music folder and to keep your library organized.

One last thing... I seem to remember that when you copy the music folder from the iPod to the PC, it will all be flagged as read-only. You must go under the properties of the copied music folder and uncheck read-only before you can add it back into iTunes.

Here's a screenshot showing my shuffle listed under My Computer. Disk Mode in not enabled.

Thank you everyone! I got all the music out and on my computer now. It's funny, it does only appear briefly on My Computer. Once it appeared and I was able to open it, then it was easy to get the music out. Thank you very much.
