Problem putting songs on shuffle from network drive

Hi - I was hoping someone here might have an idea on a frustrating problem I've been dealing with since I purchased a Network Attached Storage Drive.

Prior to having the drive, I had my music on my laptop and it x-ferred to the 2G Shuffle no problem at all. Once I've moved my music to the Network drive, synching is next to impossible. If I select a playlist w/about 200 songs or so, it will not transfer. I let it run overnight and it was not finished after over 8 hours. Itunes keeps saying updating ipod, do not disconnect. If I cancel it, I'll have about 15 songs on the ipod and the remainder did not transfer.

If I do one or two songs, I have a 50/50 chance of it working one or two songs at a time, it won't change from the updating songs do not disconnect message if it doesn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas? The song bit rates are anywhere from 128 to 320, but has no bearing on what will end up working and what will not. Thanks in advance

Are you hard wired in to the networked drive or are you connecting wirelessly with your laptop?

I have been doing exactly what you are tring to do ever since I got my first 30GB iPod video in Aug. 06 and I haven't had any problems like that. I'm doing it from my desktop that is wired into the network though. But I'm transfer 3500+ songs and usually have about 12 or more movies on my iPod at a time and everything but my iPod games are stored and ran from the networked drive.

The drive is physically plugged into my wireless router. Sure, its not going to transfer as quick as if it was plugged directly into the PC or an internal drive, but this is ridiculous. A 1 gig shuffle's songs didn't finish transferring after 8 hours. I've seen other people writing about this problem w/no definitive answer, any suggestions though? Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Oh I did notice one possible solution about changing the drive letter to make sure that the drive letter for the ipod doesn't conflict w/the storage drives, thats not the problem as I have the drive letter as R, which is definitely not the same as an ipod.

thanks again

yeah, I kinda had a feeling you were using it over a wireless connection. What causes it though... I don't know. I've heard of similar things with other devices as well, not just iPods. Best suggestion I can give you is to plug into your network whenever you need to sync your iPod.

You do have a strong signal from your router when you are trying to sync the iPod right? Probably not an issue but I just figured I would ask.

If I get some free time, I'll try my shuffle on my desktop thats connected to my network wirelessly and see how it reacts.

Nah the signal strength is ok. I can try plugging it in directly but just figured it'd be cool to do it wirelessly, since I bought that type of drive. thanks again
