2nd Generation Ipod - Diagnostics

Hello,

I am finding it very difficult to find a definitive step by step instructions on how to go into diagnostic mode in a 2nd generation ipod. Is this even possible on older ipods?

I bought a 2nd hand 20gb (2nd Generation) Ipod recently - only paid 25 so no real loss. But it is not being recognised by the PC using the USB Cable.

I don't think there is a problem with the USB Cable as a colleague picked up his Ipod using another end of the same cable (i.e. one part goes into USB port of PC, 2nd part is split into two connections (one is a thinner connection that goes into newer ipods, the other is a larger connection which goes into older ipods). He used the thinner connection. It does not rule out the possibility of one part of the lead being faulty - but this is unlikely as the person selling is also a colleague and it was working for her before she sold it to me.

As for why I am being such a cheapskate :-) - I don't care about the model, features etc - I was more interested in storage size and 20gb newer generation costs an extra 80-100.

Regards,
Raheel

Do a search on restoring a 2g Ipod, go to the wikipedia, then go get the users manual for it off one of thier links. If it can be restored, it'll be in that manual.

2nd gen iPods don't connect by USB - they are firewire only via the firewire port on the top. Either you're trying to connect it in a way that will never work (though I can't see how you could) or its not a 2nd gen.

Here's a great visual guide on how to put your iPod into different modes, it's all listed by generation too!
