Member ranking in terms of postcount

I feel it would be a good idea if the site introduced a system where we could see the top posters of the site, and also our own rankings in terms of post counts. It'll be nice fun. Do you think this will be a good idea, or do you think that this will just give rise to spammers?

Generally, it's been our experience that such things tend to give a rise to "post-whoring" and the signal-to-noise ratio will tend to start to lean sharply toward the 'noise' side as people start to look at increasing their post count as a "game", rather than making valuable contributions to the forums.

We'd rather people post on the forums because they actually have something to say, and not just because they feel that they're somehow increasing their "status"

However, if you're curious, the information is in the Member List, which can be sorted by the various column headings (simply click on them at the top). The list itself isn't readily available from any obvious links, but the URL is http://forums.ilounge.com/memberlist.php

I just went and looked at that list in that manner. Why does it say N/A for HoneyBee under last visit?

I am not too intent on having this system. Just thought it would be a nice way to know where you stand...

Practically speaking, yes, it would give rise to post-whoring.

She's invisible to the general public, only staff can see her ;) Anyone can place that as their preference.

It would be fun to look at, but it would cause people to post alot more to try and be the #1 poster.

I don't like to read posts that are just meant to be a +1 post that doesn't mean anything or contribute.

A system such as this could be useful to implement on a smaller site and forum. It could be the needed spark to breathe life into a slow moving forum. On the flip side, post whores would be coming out of the woodwork if this system was available here at ilounge.

Actually you could introduce the system, and also a warn level system. That is, every time a user is caught posting unnecessary spam, you can increase that user's warn level by 20%. If the warn level reaches 100%, that user can be banned.

If the warn level reaches 100%, that user can be banned. If we catch someone posting straight out spam, we ban them right away and remove their posts. We also have other methods of dealing with those caught spamming to increase their post count.

There are people who are quite new to forums, and don't now that spamming is wrong. So it would be nice if you could introduce this warn system, unless the spam is really annoying or abusive or something like that.

# 21 Re: Member ranking in terms of postcount
Again Sephiroth you are confusing 'spamming' with 'post whoring' - post whores get a warning.
Spammers are spammers and will get no warnings. They sign up, post their spam and leave. They expect to get banned. So we oblige...
