Press and hold the menu and select (center) buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, this may take longer than 10-20 seconds so be patient.

This procedure is called resetting the iPod, you won't lose any content on your iPod and it is similar to restarting (ie turning off and on) a computer.

It is not a major problem with the iPod at all. iPods are just like small computers; the have a operating system, RAM, a hard drive, a input device (ie clickwheel is to mouse), and two output methods (a display and audio). Computers (even Apple computers) sometimes freeze and need to be restarted. So you turn them off and on in order to get them back up and running again.

The same thing applies to the iPod. It will sometimes freeze and restarting it just turns the iPod off and on. From past experience, I have found that the 5G/5.5G (ie video) iPods require the most amount of restarting. I guess the inclusion of a more complex operating system (one that can handle video) has created more bugs. I have owned many iPods and none of them have required as many resets as my current 5G does.

Don't worry about it, it is completely normal. Now, you should worry if you have to reset your iPod once a day.
