Climate Change
Its the middle of December, and I live in the middle of Minnesota. Today I saw people jogging and exercising with shorts on. Some of my friends and I were playing basketball with T-shirts and shorts, and I repeat its the middle of December.
Some of you people may ask, but why do I care? I somewhat think this is scary. This month weve had tons of days with temperatures of high 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit, and it hasnt been snowing, its been freakin raining. In fact, its pouring as I type.
I remember we used to have snow right around thanksgiving and late October. My cousins from Texas were thrilled when they saw snow for thanksgiving, but we might now even get any for Christmas according to some news reporters.
I heard that Chicago got tons of snow a week ago, but I still think something is weird. Our climate must be changing.

Weather patterns are not always consistent.
I now pray this will not turn into a global warming/coolong or Climate change thread that will only be closed in the long run.

yeah, it was forty degrees here today in NJ, and it should be thirty or below
Which is kind of disappointing, because I love the cold weather
weather isn't always consistent though, and like baggss said, it isn't necessarily global warming

Where'd Amelie go? She'd have a few opinions on the matter ...
# 4 Re: Climate Change
There is no snow to speak of in mainland Europe, and the ski resorts are looking anxious.
Round here, the birds and animals don't know what's happening.
Summer roses are still in bloom.
The leaves stayed on the trees into November.
A few years ago, I'd be wearing a sheepskin jacket by December - whereas I'm routinely walking to the village in a shirt and sweater.
We've had only a few frosts, when we'd have had loads by now in normal times.
You'd have to be pretty stupid to deny that climate change was happening - the only question is whether that change is significant.

yeah, there is actually no snow in the alps at all
utah is covered in snow, 50" base
can't wait til the 27th!
# 6 Re: Climate Change
i live in NY, and i am really disappointed to report there has been no signs of snow whatsoever. :( if i don't see it soon i don't know what i'll do.
# 7 Re: Climate Change
Its not warm everywhere. We've had record snowfall last month; the ski season opened nearly a month earlier than usual. A couple of climbers on Mt. Hood were reported missing because of the extreme winter weather (actually, I'm not sure if they found them yet). And of course, James Kim, the CNET editor who reviewed iPods and such things, got stranded in the snow and died of hypothermia a week or so ago.

Just so everyone knows, we are in the middle of summer, not winter.
We are usually sitting at 35 C + every day, late 20's at night.
I hope it doesn't change after I say this, but we've had a mild summer so far. So much so they say we'll have the coolest Christmas in some ungodly amount of years. I'm looking forward to it. I think only a few days have reached just over 30. And the nights have cooled down considerably.
Last year it was 45, or was it the year before, or both on Christmas & Boxing Day? Who cares, it was freaking hot and unpleasant.
So it seems we are experiencing cooler weather than usual. How does that fit in?
And I repeat, I AM NOT complaining, I'm loving the mild summer. Don't kill me Albert if we get a heat wave next week. :D

Are you coming to Utah?
We actually haven't had as much snow this year either, there is a fountain near my house that they just let freeze through the winter (it becomes a really cool huge ice sculpture), but this year it just has a small amount of ice and that is even starting to melt. (It is normally frozen solid by Christmas)
But the ski resorts are still great, especially considering it has been cold enough for them to make snow. :D
# 10 Re: Climate Change
Climate change is more subtle than merely 'global warming' or 'global cooling' - it's about changing weather patterns - with more drought in some places, and more rainfall in others, it's about global dimming masking the effects of global warming, and its about milder winters in some places and milder winters in others.
But in my view, the real problem will come with rising sea levels as the polar ice melts - I suspect that we can probably cope with the rest.

yeah, i'm going to alta, and maybe getting the combo pass to snowbird to get to the mineral basin
I just think that alta has better conditions and more difficult trails than snowbird, which makes it even more excellent
and of course, skiers only ;)

Hey cool. Sounds like the temperature here every week
# 13 Re: Climate Change
But what of the Humidity?
baggss at 2007-11-15 18:08:59 >

# 14 Re: Climate Change
99%. I can't imagine its that bad anywhere else in the world.
Where'd Amelie go? She'd have a few opinions on the matter ...
She's busy I think. I talk to her every now and then on AIM.
# 15 Re: Climate Change
come to california, it was 80 degrees the other day
# 16 Re: Climate Change
...and right now it's 53. Rather nice actually, and normal.

# 17 Re: Climate Change
But what of the Humidity?
That's usually the killer for us. We can have a 35 C day and the humidity is low, then have a 32 C day and it's a killer. The humidity hasn't even been so bad. It's never as bad as 99% like with Kris, but it can easily sit in the 80's. Today is 27 C, 54% humidity. It's a bit hot if you stand in the sun in the middle of the day for a while, but otherwise, nice.
And just on what Jacko was saying re more rain, drought. We are having our worst drought for some ungodly amount of years too (I always say ungodly amount when I can't remember the actual figures, but it's a long time). ;)
So much so I find myself excited when it rains. 1am and I'm outside watching it fill up our tank. Yeah I know, get a life. :p
But it seems we never have that wake up in the morning and you want to stay in bed because it's raining. We get a belter of summer storm with about 10 minutes of rain and that's about it.
But I've never felt heat like the time we went to Airlie Beach at Christmas. It was so hot and very tropical conditions, so the humidity was very high. I was melting at the rock pool and I actually thought I saw Diesel, said to myself, "####, that's Diesel", but was too tired to bother trying to jump him. I'm pretty sure it would have been him as I read in the paper he'd played the night before. Damn that heat.

hmm i'm down in south west vic .. and it's been pretty good weather lately. inconsistent, but nice.
nice and warm.
# 19 Re: Climate Change
Yeah, it's kinda scary, because I live in CANADA!!!...anyways, I live in Vancouver and it was sunny today. Sunny. In. December. How scary is that? And it didn't snow last year too. I mean, no snow in CANADA?! Thats like the P.u.ssycat Dolls without the dancing, or Red Bull without caffeine.
# 20 Re: Climate Change
It's supposed to be sunny and 70 degrees all weekend here. :D

We get snow once every few years in Portland, and its usually gone within the day (which is fine with me).

And close to sixty (in NY, but that's basically the same thing) today! With Christmas two weeks away, that's just plain weird.
It's not really the milder weather that bothers me, more the inconsistency of the weather. One day you'll have forty, the next sixty, followed by thirty-five, and so on. It completely screws with your immune system, not to mention having to juggle the autumn/winter/spring wardrobes. I wish Mother Nature would settle into a groove already.
# 23 Re: Climate Change
As if we didn't have enough to worry about, wait until the Earth's magnetic field flip-flops and North becomes South. Flipping the compass around isn't so bad, it's the intermediate time between the change where solar radiation will be able to bake us to a crisp ...

Yes, especially about the part where they suspect Mars' magnetic field was out of kilter and the solar winds basically blew the planet clean of any atmosphere.
