Welcome. iPod: About compatible song formats (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61476). You can use the iPod support site at Apple for information about iPods & iTunes.
You can use the 'select your product' drop down menu in the upper right:

Your friend is a monkey. The files are definitely not too big for your iPod, especially if your getting an 80GB model. Most limewire files are 128kbps anyway, smaller than the average bitrate (to me at least).
Sure you could sacrifice sound quality for song quantity, but unless you have 20,000 + songs, they is no need for that sacrifice. However your songs have been/will be aquired, your fine. You'll run out of space quicker if you files are really, really high quality (usually taken by a CD you custom ripped), but still, like me, I'm guessing you'd rather have 15,000 songs with amazing audio quality over 18,000 with noticably poorer quality.

Surprisingly, this is a common misconception from the general public. Many people think that you have to get your music through iTunes in order to use a iPod. This is pure nonsense. As long as the songs on your computer (we won't discuss the source) are in either the mpeg-4 AAC (m4a), mp3, Apple lossless, wav, or AIFF formats, then the iPod will play them just fine. As honeybee already pointed out, you can view the full song compatibility list (and their subsequent bitrates) for iPods on Apple's website.
