ipods VS lectures

how many times have you seen someone listening to an ipod during a lecture. and how many times have you seen someone actually use an ipod to record a lecture?

my answer to the first is many many times, i have been guilty of it myself, and if not listening to something (because of that tell tale white earphone cable) at least watching some show under the desk with a friend.

the answer to the second question is quite the opposite, i have NEVER seen anyone use thier ipods in a lecture to actually tape it, i KNOW they have it, i just see anyone actually do it.

i was just wondering about other peoples experiences in that matter

My thought has always been "if you don't want to pay attention in class, don't go." I've never seen anyone listening to any type of music player in class (cd players in high school, or DAPs in college). If I was a teacher and I caught a student listening to a DAP in class, I'd confiscate it then kick them out.

As far as recording lectures go, I'll quote one of my professors: "Don't bother. I know if you listen to me for an hour and a half once, you don't want to do it again."

Besides, with iPods, everyone may have one, but very few actually have the microphone accessory.

I use mine in class to play Solitaire or Bejeweled (rockbox version) when it's not pertinent info and I usually try to do it "discreetly". If they had a damn keyboard attachment I'd use it like a PDA and take notes instead of pen and paper. I'm planning on getting the Microphone for X-mas partially for class but admittedly I probably won't listen to the whole lecture but it's good to have it on record to refer to. When I was using an old tape recorder before I'd mark down at what time during the recording was important.

I only do this during either French or right before a vacation week, because as we all know, no class actually does stuff before a vacation week

but I have seen people listen during class on regular days

one of my buddies used a really tiny electronic recorder to record lectures, but I never saw anyone do it with an iPod

This year, in my Calculus 3 class, was the first time I've ever seen someone listen to an iPod during class. It was the kid sitting next to me. He usually listens to it during class. One day he had it turned up too loud. Everyone sitting within a 10-foot radius noticed but was too polite to say anything, except for the girl in front of him. She passed him a note and immediately he turned the music down right away.
