iPhone / Cingular in the Uk (or Europe)?
Do Cingular operate outside of the US?
I'm just thinking of the iPhone in Europe, or specifically the UK.
Sorry if this has been asked already.

I've seen reports of 4Q '07 for Europe and '08 for Asia, but not from any official source.
Cingular/AT&T do not operate in the UK, I assume Apple will select another network operator for an exclusive contract. Given that some features (e.g. visual voicemail) requier network support, I wonder how much of what we saw yesterday will actually be available outside the US?
After all, the much-vaunted TV shows and Movies are not available on iTunes outside the US, which makes Apple TV something of a dead product outside the US..

Hmmm, it'll be interesting to see what they decide to do with regards to network operators.
If they don't agree an exclusive deal with someone, the US will probably be importing a load of unlocked phones!
As you say though, a few features require network support, so I can't see it being offered without a contract.
I also wonder if there might be a newer model available by the time the phone reaches the UK, with bigger storage.
I've checked the UK Apple store, and the Apple TV is listed. I think there are some TV shows and films available here through iTunes, but I'm not a user so can't confirm it 100%.

UK iTunes store has Music Videos and Pixar short films - no TV shows or feature-length movies. Interestingly, BBC, ITV, C4 and Five are all experimenting with VOD, and none of them are doing it with iTunes (publicly, at least)

 Cingular in the UK?
Mate we get better operators over here. Expect this to be either with O2, Vodaphone and eventually t-mobile.

Same issue here in Canada. In a phone board where I also lurk everybody is going when is Rogers "GSM provider in Canada" going to get it over and over again.
Well look at the Canadian Apple Store no mention of the iPhone, look at iTunes Canada no video content at all except for the Pixar short films.
Apple makes most of its cash of iTunes until we get iTunes content in Canada or Britian I doubt we will see the iPhone. May happen but I doubt it.
I can buy iTV in Canada and we have not Video content the same may go with the iPhone.
It makes more sense selling the iPhone as a MP3 player and a phone combo then buying a iTV. What are the guys buying iTV going to do... looking I download "Bounding" see how great it looks on the 60 inch Plasma ?

As others have pointed out, Cingular do not operate a service outside the USA. It is likely that Apple will select another operator that will have exclusive rights to the iPhone, or it may even select all five of the major telecommunications players (Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Three and Orange). One possible reason for striking a deal with Cingular in the US is the GSM infrastructure that company uses; GSM networking is by far the standard and 80% of the world uses it [Verizon and Sprint operate CDMA networks].
Of course this is all speculation at the moment and Apple has every right to be 'picky' about which operator they select. With an estimated release date in Europe of the 4th quarter they have every opportunity to 'get it right'.
It's an interesting discussion about Apple TV. I am of the opinion of some others on this board. With the limited iTunes catologue available in my country it is almost rendered useless compared to our better stocked American cousins. But we shall see how well it sells, or it may even be an intention to revise the licensing of TV and Film contracts in this country which would lead to more videos being put up for sale in the UK iTunes Store.

(Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Three and Orange.
I doubt 3 will be interested since the iPhone isn't a 3G device. They have a 2G fallback with Orange (it used to be O2) but they won't want iPhone users to be using that exclusively...
# 8 Re: iPhone / Cingular in the Uk (or Europe)?
five quid Vodafone will have this first. Afterall, they have the most money to secure it.
# 9 Re: iPhone / Cingular in the Uk (or Europe)?
Ok peeps.. i originally thought it was going to be vodafone too, and something tells me it might be still. However a source has told me that cingular are about to setup in the UK. One thing to consider is that it requires EDGE services, I don't believe any UK network has that. So given we don't get this until Q4 it could be a 3G unit or cingular edge services.

I think Vodafone recently posted a huge loss, something like 16Billion.
T-Mobile have the big German company behind em but have less customers than the oter three networks... O2 tend to get the HTC Pocket PC's first.... Orange already has an EDGE network...

Now they have removed these prices (just like amazon.co.uk). I think 1000 Euros would be way to high for a consumer product.

For high end smart fones like thes,e we tend to not buy sim free anyhow - my 625 HTC Universal had 500 off with a 30/mth 12 month contract.
