My Ipod got stolen today!
I just got back to work & realized that I left my Ipod in my cubicle overnight. Well bad move cuz now it is gone! It was a 5G 30gb fully loaded with 20gigs of music, a few gigs worth of home movies(christmas, birthdays), a couple gigs of pics & some shows & video podcasts I got off of iTunes. Woe is me. I wouldn't mind losing a gadget as much if it wasn't so personalized. I had a load of pics in it. I am going to by a replacement but I cant figure out exactly which Ipod to replace it with.
When i do buy my new Ipod, will I be able to use it with my current iTunes library in my PC? Will I have to transfer my entire library back into a new iTunes for the new Ipod??

You will be able to use your iPod with your current itunes library, as mentioned. I'm sorry to hear about it being stolen, but it's one of those live and learn things I suppose.

Man, thats bad news. Sorry. I use three ipods with one itune. 4th 40gb,5th 30gb and a 5th 60gb. You should be fine.

Just as long as all your content on your iPod is on you're computer you'll be fine.
I'm confused because my reaction would be the complete opposite, I don't mind uploading all my content again I'd just be miffed that I had a valuable gadget taken from my possession. But hey you're probably doing the right thing, there's nothing you can do about the thing now and it will teach you to be more careful next time.

I suspect my 60GB Video iPod was stolen from me last year, and it sucks. They were $400 at the time too which makes it even worse.

where do you work where people steal ipods?

Could be office cleaning staff.
I admit, I sometimes get nervous at the end of the day - I leave my iPod on my desk, which is close to the front door of the office as everyone is leaving, while I go to the back to get my jacket, and I fear one of my co-workers will snatch it on their way out. It's a small office (only about 40 people) and I don't think anyone would do that to me, but you never know.

Wait for the new touchscreens :]

I wonder if stolen iPods can be traced to people's IP addresses when they try to access iTunes. The iPod's serial number is present and I wonder if it is sent to Apple when using iTunes. It certainly would be a nice thing for Apple to do to help catch the scumbags who rip off iPods to require iTunes to send serial number to Apple and they match it to a list of stolen iPod serial numbers. Then register the IP address and time/date, then pass along to the authorities.

If I knew Apple did that, and I were to steal an iPod* then I would probably just use some other software to sync, not iTunes.
* I never would - I lost a mini once, and I know someone found it, and I had a "If found, please call" note on there, so the scumbag must have kept it.

No, unfortunately this is not possible. Apple would have to dedicate an entire team to the project. No other companies are willing to do this, why should apple?
