First I'd say get an InvisibleSHIELD (http://www.shieldzone.com) or BSE (http://www.bestskinsever.com) skin to protect your iPod from scratches. That's basically all I'd say you should "really" buy when you get an iPod. I personally love having a dock for my iPod to use with my speakers in my bedroom, so that could be another thing. I'd also recommend maybe getting some kind of case to protect your iPod if you happen to drop it or something.

yes, it'll still work with a Claro. If it attaches to the iPod in some way though, I dought you'll be able to do that with the Claro. Belkin also has something similar but uses 4 AA batteries I think but it also lasts much longer, just a thought if your already looking at something like that.

Something else to think about would be a wall charger if you plan on travelling or being away from a computer and need to charge your iPod. I bought one for when I'm on vacation, camping, up north, ect and it works great.

A good set of earphones may be something you want if you find the supplied earphones are good enough for whatever reason. I like the newer model earphones for at work because I can still hear around me, but for other times when in the car and that I'd prefer something with sound isolation so I'm currently looking for a good set of in-ear phones.

Basically, everything you need is already included with your iPod. Everything else is personal preference. more protection, better sound, charge away from computer, ect.

Priority:
Invisible Shield
In-Ear Headphones

Worth considering:
iPod Dock (if there is no access to a USB port at the front of you're computer)
Charger and extra USB lead (if you bought a dock)

I'd go for all four if money wasn't an issue but I would definitely go for the first two with a new 80GB iPod.

You'll most definitely need some kind of protection, whether it be a case or protective film or a combination of the two.

Everything else depends on your habits, though I've found having a travel charger and transmitter for the car have been very useful too.

#1 priority in iPod Life is a CASE for SURE..anything that protects the screen will do the trick you don't have to spend gobs and gobs of money for a state of the art case.

#2 priority is HEADPHONES, the stock ones are crap. Sennheiser 300CX, Shure E2C, Sony MDRLP51s are commonly recommended ones.

I use both film covers (similar to invisible shield) and a case (Iskin Claro) but I can be pretty clumsy so I definitely need the drop protection! Also, I second Paranoid on the headphones.

rsvl, you raise the same point as I do with Invisible Shield and that is the fact that you have to spray water onto a new piece of kit, very unorthodox. I think battery packs for charging are bulky, clumsy and unnecessary - trust me, I've seen the things! For travel I would simply buy an official Apple iPod charger that works with your plugs at home, then simply buy a generic plug adapter for your destination. Then you can simply plug your charger and anything else you want to use into that plug adapter.

the only reason i am getting the battery pack is because i will be taking a flight which will be over 27 hours so i will need it because i will have no place to charge it until i get to my destination!

The most critical accessory is a protective case. My advise to you if you plan on clipping
the iPod to your belt is to have a loop or lanyard that loops around your belt to be a
backup should the clip come loose. It's far better to find your iPod is swinging from a
lanyard than to find that you've lost it or it was damaged when it fell on to concrete.
