80GB Ipod - Audiobook playback apparently broken - new to ipods

#1 Sometimes 10-20 seconds or so after resuming position, it simply _stops_ and goes back to the menu.. Go back the the audiobook, and the position is now at 0:00!!!

#2 The "faster" playback just doesn't seem to work. It seems - varying in degree of badness by the bitrate/frequency of the file - it will play a few second chunks at a time that overlap instead of one smooth fast playback. i.e. after every 2 seconds the voice of the author doubles or echoes, and in worst cases just gets cut off so the rhythm of speech is completely broken and parts missing. This just appears to not work right - but perhaps there is a magic frequency and bitrate which works best? Does anyone know what this is?

Hard to believe this doesn't work, google turns up nothing. but heh, I was mildy surprised when I got my ipod that it didn't support most of my audio formats and video formats.. Simply drag and drop, isn't that how simple macs are supposed to be? Ugh.. I convert most of my music in linux, which does seem to do useful things
