Supermod

I have an idea to mod an old 1, 2, or 3g ipod with an ipod photo motherboard and screen, then use a rewritten operating system to play videos... i also wanted to upgrade to a larger (60 for a 3g, or 100 for a 1 or 2g) hard drive.

Ive been toying with this idea for quite some time now. Im sure i am capable of doing it. If you have any ideas or suggestions let me know, im hoping it will be superfun, and not too crazy hard.

Post your thoughts

P.S. I also had other more minor mods such as led swaps on the 3g ipods, and paint; or on a 1 or 2g ipod, swap for a 1g scroll wheel thats backlit (light escaping around the edges), and a dock connector conversion.

I dont think it will all firt securely. You will probally need to buy a new back.

if i was getting a 3g, i was going to swap out a 60gb 4g photo back... thats the least of my worries though, this project will require a LOT of modification, because of the touchpad/scroll wheel interface and the photo mainboard. Im definatly prepared to break a few mainboards/faceplates etc.

ALSO, I'm getting a colorware paint job if i get a 3g, and ideas for colors that work well on 3g ipods?

Post ideas and suggestions PLEAASSE :)

really, its not going to cost more than it would for a 60 gb video. if youve ever checked ebay, you can get dead 1-3g ipods for as little as 20 bucks plus shipping

im budgeting 200-250 dollars for everything except paint (50 dollar difference depends on how big of a hard drive i can cram in there)

You people seem to all be kinda shallow in the mod dept. So far ive seen people like going nuts over an LED swap. I realize this forum isnt into hacking and modding so much as some others, but its kinda sad the lack of modding knowledge that exists here. with that in mind im just asking for ideas, nothing big, just what you think would look cool... I thought id try and do something completely new, something noones seen before here before. i really hope you guys like it :)

Also, im gonna make a complete photo documented guide for those of you who want to try some of this yourself (be ready for lots of mistakes that ruin parts for good though)

If anyone please has ideas, i joined this forum so i could get suggestions, not putdowns, so how about an idea, anything at all :)

I think you'd have to be pretty good at soldering but thats all I can really think of

You are definately going to have to re-route some wires. Which means soldering as Macromedia said. And I would wait until you get it working before you send it in to be painted.

but its impossible.

its not impossible...its a simple interface really. the touchpad has several main inputs as well as a few others, each generation of ipod contains these inputs, just arranged with a different plug in a different combination of wires. there is a sensor for the 4 buttons, the center button and then the sensors for the touchpad. nothing changes. my biggest problem will be finding room for the various mods inside the ipod.

and just to let you know, its possible, i know someone that did something very similar using a video motherboard and a photo screen with the operating system rewritten for smaller screen dimensions in a 1g ipod.

Im searching ebay for used 3g ipods and photo motherboards and screens, if you know of any for a reasonable price, let me know :)

Cheers!

Alright let's see...
First of all, soldering is probably the last/easiest thing to worry about here.

So basically you want an iPod photo with a 3G interface, a larger hdd, and custom software. It's doable. The larger harddrive is the easiest so you don't have to worry about it. You seem to know about the software part, so I'll leave you with the ideas for that since I work with hardware more. The interface shouldn't be tooo complicated. If I remember correctly the pinouts are similiar, but not the same. I guess a simple jumping pins would work fine. But I don't think the software interface is the same...it might need to be decoded then reencoded. I have no idea how to go about doing that...so that's up to you. Everything else seems to be straightforward...You should probably just build ontop of linux since it is already well established and such. Oh and btw, colorwarepc is WAY overpriced for what they do. They just hike up their prices since mac owners think colorware is the best and are willing to pay the prices. I personally think I do a better job with the airbrush then them. But if you look around you can find some crazy good painters that charge 25% of the price of colorware.

I'll add some more comments as I think of them. Feel free to PM me since I've taken an interest in this. I can do crazy stuff with hardware modding, but software isn't my area...

Wow, i guess I shouldn't say it's impossible, but you're gonna have to be one hell of a genius to do it.

Show results, that's when I'll believe you.

I wouldn't be surprised if this guy did do it but it would be hard. If you want broken ipods, skielms, just post in the for sale forums that you will buy broken ipods and ipod parts

Thanks for the intrest guys.

Macromedia... I think ill try my luck with some ebay auctions first, gonna see how that goes.

Project is starting slowly, gotta get parts first, which will be a LOT. im prolly gonna try for like 3 or 4 3g faceplates, some spare standard 4g mainboards to dink around on (dont wanna waste a rather expensive photo motherboard if i dont have to, even though i prolly will), 1 or 2 photo mainboards, 1 photo lcd, 1 greyscale lcd, 1 or 2 3g mainboards (for testing), a couple batteries (1 for both 3g motherboard, and 4 g motherboards), 1 hard drive 80gb (hard drives are really hard to kill, motherboards usually dont kill the hard drive with them), 1 15gb test hard drive, lexan plastic sheet, a few back covers of several sizes (3g and up through photo will fit a 3g), leds for the 3g backlights, and silicon caulk for filler in some areas.

the bidding for parts is beginning, and ill see what other cool ideas i can come up with while im collecting materials...

keep leavin feedback! :)
