Name that Band! (Or Artist)

Alrighty, describe a Band or an Artist briefly without saying their name and then the next poster guesses the Band. Simple enough...

Now for an easy very first post just to get started:

A group of four, two have passed away as of today. The band formed in 1959, and broke up in 1970. The first one to die was from a crazed fan in 1980. Their manager was called Brian Epstein.

:D An easy starter!

very easy start indeed the beatles, of course.

next: this british band formed at the end of the 60s and had a style similar to the stones, although they never achieved the same level of fame. after breaking up in 74, the lead singer went on to a very successful solo career, and both the drummer and rhythm guitarist each went on to hugely successful british rock bands. the bass player, one of the founding members, was diagnosed with ms in the 70s and passed away in 97.

any guesses as to who this great blues-rock band was?

I'll edit this post if I'm right, but I wanna say The Kinks?

nope, guess again. clue - the lead singer went through a disco/pop phase and that's how most people think of him today, not realizing he was quite the rocker back in the day.

and the answer is ...

faces
after their demise, rhythm guitarist ron wood joined the stones, drummer kenny jones joined the who, and rod stewart went on to a solo career. in '83 clapton, page, townsend and others held a benefit concert to raise awareness and funding to combat multiple sclerosis, the disease which eventually took the life of bass player, and faces co-founder, ronnie lane.

i'll leave the door open for the next participant ...
