No, OS 9 will not work.

I've got a G3 and I had to upgrade from OSX 10.1 to OSX 10.3 (Panther) in order to get my my iPod to work. I was going to upgrade to OSX 10.4 (Tiger), but my G3 has no DVD driver and that version is only available as a DVD in the retail market. You can, however, swap the OSX 10.4 DVD for a CD-ROM from Apple through the mail.

I didn't want to go through with the hassle of an exchange so I bought a CD-ROM version of OSX 10.3 (Panther) on eBay for about $30 including postage. Be sure it's the CD-ROM version and not the DVD if you don't have a DVD driver!

The internal hard drive in my G3 is only 20GB which is the same as my iPod. If you're in the same situation, I recommend using an external hard drive.

I hope I answered your question. . .
