not a macintosh person but, (windows person) i do believe that the mac should support enough power to play games. except maybe the mac mini. well i can't really help you more than that.

You will have to spend so much on the Mac-specialized versions of the required video cards in a powerful system (a PowerMac pretty much) that you could buy a PC plus all of the next-generation consoles. As much as I like Macs (more specifically, as much as I like OS X), they are not acceptable for gaming.

Macs have reputations as poor bang for the buck when it comes to gaming. That's generally because the more affordable Macs (iMac, iBook, Mac mini) come with less powerful video cards and are often non-upgradable. You'd have to get a high-end Mac to run a high-end card.

I'm not sure why getting a Mac would expand your iPod usability, though from anecdotal evidence from my Windows buddies with iPods, it would probably be a smoother ride.

To be honest, SOME games are OK on the Mac. I play the SIMs (and SIMS 2) and even HALO (almost strictly on-line) on my Mac and they are OK, but JUST OK. I'm more likely to go play a game on my PS2 than I am on my Mac. If you want some lite gaming, the Mac is good, but if you want hardcore gaming, use a PS2 or Xbox, or just get another PC....

Also, the newest and hottest games lag in release for the Mac. Anywhere from six months to never for the Mac. That's just the way it is....

Blizzard Entertainment (creator of WOW, WC, Diablo) releases games on Mac and PC simultaneously. So do most Eidos games. There is a gradual shifting trend IMO. So if you play those kind of games they will work.

Microsoft Word for Windows WILL NOT work on Mac OS X, however there are cheap (iWork 05) and free (OpenOffice) alternatives.

Good luck!

......However you can buy Microsoft Office for the Mac

And I could almost live off Blizzard games :p

I have a friend at uni with a little mac laptop and he loves it, small and light and does what it needs to when it needs to.

if your thinking about some gaming on your Mac laptop you better get a PowerBook. I dont think iBook will be powerful enough to run games like WarCraft III and World of Warcraft.

Tsk tsk... Kristiano wasn't even going to mention that. I wonder why. ;)

I think developers who do release mac games make it so they run as best as they can on mac hardware. If you really want top quality games though, windows is definitely a better choice.

If you want to play games, stick with Windows. While there are Mac games, developers usually focus on Windows just because of the signifigantly larger userbase.

I've never enjoyed PC games anyway, so my Mac or PC will always sit next to a game system.

Right now it's next to a Famicom, Famicom Disk System, GameCube, Japanese GameCube, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Genesis Nomad, Super NES, NES, and PlayStation. Virtual Boy, various Game Boy systems, and Nintendo DS are around too.

Bollocks. My iBook which was introduced 18 months ago runs WCIII and WOW just fine.

and how much more RAM did you add to your iBook?

My roomate runs WCIII and WOW constantly on his 14" iBook. I think he has a gig of ram and a 1.2-1.4gig processor. Never has any issues. My 1.5gig 12" powerbook runs halo pretty good. Honestly, an xbox is cheaper and better for gaming then either a wintel machine or a mac...get a powerbook and an x-box and live happy.

256+512.

I have run WCIII on a 1Ghz iMac G4 with 512MB too and it works just fine too.

precisely my point! WCIII and WoW would never run on 256MB RAM. so an off the shelf iBook with less than 512MB RAM would never be able to run WCIII and WoW smoothly.

ya but come on, who would ever leave it at 256mb. theyd proabaly add more RAM anyway, even if they werent playing games.

True, but that wasn't the point. Sure an iBook can run it, but you do have to add more RAM to make it work right.

^^^ Remember third grade English?

My best friend has a 14 inch iBook which runs WoW perfectly, but, as covered already, it does have some RAM added.

iBooks come with 512 built in dudes..

Yes, but they didn't used to. Is 512 enough to play that game?

I said so earlier. Plus keep in mind that the current range of iBooks have faster processors too.
