Great indie discoveries
I spent a fair amount of time (too much, really) searching out for new music (of which I probably also have too much, really). Sometimes it can be weeks with no discoveries, but this past week has been a good one.
I usually just search around blogs or threads here, and pay particular interest if they're on eMusic (the cheapest legal way to get music, and usually much higher quality than iTMS). And of course I'll check out free tracks.
I heard of Blusom (http://www.emusic.com/artist/11548/11548736.html) through an indie blog called Mystery & Misery (http://mysteryandmisery.com). Their latest, The Metapolitan (http://www.emusic.com/album/10860/10860741.html) is on eMusic, but click on this link (http://www.mysteryandmisery.com/article/547/blusom) to get to some free tracks.
Then my daughter (another indie junkie) asks if I have Minus The Bear. "Sounds familiar", I say, "who sings it?" "That's the name of the band!". Duh.
So I go looking in my eMusic "to download" list, and yeah there's a bunch of MTB. There are also some tracks on Puremusic (http://www.purevolume.com/minusthebear). Good rockin stuff.
Then today I came across the band Teenage Fanclub (http://www.emusic.com/artist/11556/11556164.html). Hey, they're also on eMusic! Their album Man Made (http://www.emusic.com/album/10861/10861431.html) sounds like some really good stuff.
Its been a good week!
Anyone else have some good discoveries lately? If so, share...and let us know how you found them!

# 1 Re: Great indie discoveries
Well, if no one else will reply, I will! Maybe I'll just update this if there are no objections. I see plenty of views on it.
This weeks happenings:
1. My library had "Man Made" by Teenage Fan Club, so I checked it out. Its amazing how poorly those 30-second clips reflect the overall feel of an album, or even a song. Several tracks on this CD were terribly repetitive. The opening track just sounds like that 30-second clip played over and over again. It was a great 30 seconds, though. :)
2. I also heard "Strange Geometry" by The Clientele. A similar sound to Teenage Fanclub - very "poppy". Sounds very much like some 60s pop, but I'm not familiar enough with that genre to name a comparable band. Its on eMusic.
3. I'm not totally anti-pop, especially when it free. Mystery and Misery (http://www.mysteryandmisery.com/) had an update on a British band The Arrogants (http://www.arrogants.com/songs.html). I got the tracks "Feels Like Falling In Love", "Another Cold Morning", and the instrumental "Skyscraper".
4. Jackonicko is a UK iLounger with a definite "thing" for UK rock. That stuff isn't really indie of course, but a lot of us on the other side of the pond just sort of lump it in that genre when the sound is somewhat consistent. I tried like hell to like British Sea Power, one of his favorites (I think), but other than the track "Please Stand Up" I never could. In the "Best of 2005" he listed "Road to Rouen" by Supergrass. That is my find of the week.
5. A last minute addition/edit: M&M had an update on Aberdeen City (http://www.aberdeenmusic.com/index1.php) (click on 'media' for MP3s). The sound is sort of familiar (Bloc Party-ish?), though they sound sort of like the Killers in the track Sixty Lives (http://www.dovecoterecords.com/Press/Aberdeen%20City/AC%2060%20Lives.mp3). Good stuff. Free stuff.
I also burned a bunch of CDs onto an MP3 CD, and wrote "Please Stand" on it. This was not intentional; I was just thinking about that song, and got two words into it before I realized what I was doing. I loaned it to a friend who was totally baffled at my CD labeling. Some songs just get stuck in the brain. :)
My daughter is upstairs listening to the Album Leaf. Ah, it makes a father proud. :)

# 2 Re: Great indie discoveries
Its been a quiet week for music discoveries (and its been more than a week), but I see the view count keeps going up on this little thread so time to update.
Just one this week, and its both good and bad news:
Z, by My Morning Jacket (http://www.mymorningjacket.com/)
The band's name alone is enough to turn you off on this, but trust me, its very good. I think I'm going to have to revise my top 5 for the year to include this one. There are a couple of songs on the URL above that you can listen to, but it doesn't really capture the full essense of the album. Its somewhat theatrical in the vein of Pink Floyd or the Flaming Lips, maybe a bit subdued at times, but it flows well from one song to another rather than being just a bunch of songs.
The bad news, though, is it has "copy protection". And frankly, I refuse to buy "copy-protected" CDs. I keep putting it in quotes because its software that is installed against my wishes, that interferes with my system...that's not "protection", that's a virus.
The amazing thing is, this was apparently done without the band or even the label's permission. From ATO's website: "Neither we nor our artists ever gave permission for the use of this technology, nor is it our distributor's opinion that they need our permission. Wherever it is our decision, we will forego use of copy-protection, just as we have in the past." There are further apologies, but you get the gist.
I was lucky enough to find a promo CD from an Amazon seller that should be free of the Suncomm annoyance (but no nice CD insert). It was the only one available.
So you'll have to decide for yourself. I really try to discourage people from buying crippled CDs, but given the extenuating circumstances of it being done even against the label's wishes (MMJ is not the only band that hates such interference), this might be one time to make an exception. I've been struggling with it for the past few days, and was lucky enough to find a promo so I didn't have to sacrifice my principles.
Its Mediamax so its pretty easy to get around (there is a description of how to do it at this URL (http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=themusic;action=display;num=11287542 42)). That's from the band's website.

# 5 Re: Great indie discoveries
Uh Arctic Monkeys were a great discovery... they got to #1 in the singles chart last week... to be knocked off by Westlife. Ugh.
My main discovery this week wasn't indie.. it was getting back into hip hop and finding that Cage had released an amazing album recently.
More recent indieness included Clor, Test Icicles, Cut Copy, White Rose Movement, Wolf Parade, Field Music and Electric Soft Parade. From a combination of friends recommendations, MTV2, similar artists in audioscrobbler etc.
I tried like hell to like British Sea Power, one of his favorites (I think), but other than the track "Please Stand Up" I never could
They're brilliant!! Were so amazing (and weird) live...
--> Edit : I'm liking The Arrogants and Aberdeen City.. although the songs I clicked on sound a bit too.. soft/melodic for my liking.
The Fallout Trust are good and kinda similar to the above two..

I don't think this band is indie, but I just discovered over here. The Go! Team is all I've been listening too for the past couple of days. I think they are already huge in the UK? But that's my discovery.
I like Bloc Party and the Killers so I will definately be checking out Aberdeen City. Thanks!

mmm, me likes their sound very much. (though the text on their website is tres annoying.) I'm guessing the EP is available only in the UK for now; I'll have to put it on my list for when I'm there next month...
# 13 Re: Great indie discoveries
"Esta Vida" by Grasshopper Takeover.......if im right, these guys are locals here, very good though
# 14 Re: Great indie discoveries
Wash your mouth out - I didn't recommend British Sea Power, but 'Road to Rouen' by Supergrass is my album of the year, better even than the Kasabian album or Jamiroquai's superb 'Dynamite'.
I'd have recommended My Morning Jacket, too, if I'd thought that a US band would have escaped you. Do I need to list Beck's 'Guero'?
Of this year's releases (and taking Bloc Party, Coldplay, and the Kaiser Chiefs as read), I'd also tentatively recommend 'Jackinabox' by Turin Brakes, 'Dead 60s' by the Dead 60s, 'Stars of CCTV' by Hard Fi, and '1st comes 1st' by the Paddingtons, though none of them are classic or GREAT albums.
On the subject of 'Jackogems' ('Road to Rouen', 'Kasabian' and 'Dynamite' definitely are) have you checked out 'The Music' by the Music, 'Second Coming' by the Stone Roses, '22-20s' by the 22-20s, 'Boomslang' by Johnny Marr and the Healers, 'Word of Mouth' by the Blueskins, 'Expecting to Fly' by the Bluetones, 'All Change' by Cast, and 'Bring It On' by Gomez?

Sorry if the British Sea Power ref offended you Jacko, I've lost track of who recommended who! I'll check out some of the other stuff you listed, the only one I've heard was The Music (and it wasn't really my thing), and Gomez, who are great.
I just finished up a month on eMusic, with lots of great discoveries. Some favorites:
Black Sheep Boy, by Okkervil River (http://www.emusic.com/album/10858/10858066.html). Sort of folk-ish, but he does rock from time to time. I like the dynamics of that. Next month I'll be downloading the "Appendix" to the album, which I guess is a disk 2 that wasn't released with the first...?
Yoko, by Beulah (http://www.emusic.com/album/10858/10858446.html). This San Francisco band broke up a year or so ago, after releasing a great album. Just got fed up, I guess. Even Yoko liked the album.
On the topic of couple-year-old albums, I'm also enjoying Logic Will Break Your Heart by the Stills (http://www.emusic.com/album/10859/10859245.html).

"Z" has certainly become well-known in the music-watching circles, but its never made it on the Billboard top 20 album charts. It held the #1 position on the Coalition of Independent Music Stores chart.

Hmmmm...My bad.
I heard of MMJ cause they were on RS for the previous issue and were on one or two of the charts. Hmm...
# 24 Re: Great indie discoveries
I check a few music blogs from time to time, and lately have found good stuff on My Old Kentucky Blog (http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/). I didn't bother with it for a long time just because of the name (sounds like some sort of Elvis blog!).
Recently they featured a guy whose band/project is called B.C. Camplight. This is indie pop at its best. Its hard not to draw the comparisons with Badly Drawn Boy, though its not nearly as heavily produced as BDB's albums since The Hour of Bewilderbeast. If anything, its almost like another Bewiderbeast (minus all the fishing and camping references, which isn't a bad thing).
The other good news is you can hear a lot of it on the cheap! B.C. has four songs downloadable for free on his website: link here (http://www.bccamplight.com/media.htm). And the entire album is downloadable from eMusic. I got all but two songs, and its very good.

damn, cant post links!!..put 'si connelly' in 'myspace'
Check him out, saw him supporting david ford at Norwich arts centre the other night...Thought he had a marvelous voice and its got to be said that these songs dont really do him justice for his live performance...Think everyone at the gig applauded him more than david ford lol...But I really think hes worth a try!
Best track off the site is probably wide open or city lights!
# 26 Re: Great indie discoveries
Si Connelly: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=19380380
Its OK, mostly solo guitar & voice. Really needs some production to make a good EP.
Reminds me a bit of some recent music from Rocky Votolato, who I'll be seeing with Minus the Bear next month. MP3s: http://www.barsuk.com/bands/rockyvotolato/media

# 27 Re: Great indie discoveries
Minus the bear are really good, how I envy you!..should be good a good gig , rocky votolato aint to bad either...quite liked 'suicide machine'.
# 28 Re: Great indie discoveries
I just got done with two months of eMusic. The music I've been enjoying the most is Elbow's "Leaders of the Free World" and Crooked Fingers' "Dignity and Shame".
Crooked Fingers tends to sound a little like Neil Diamond, except he lets his female backup sing quite a bit on her own. A good sample download is on toolshedmedia: http://toolshedmedia03.com/ts/crooked-fingers-call-to-love.mp3

# 29 Re: Great indie discoveries
I occasionally find good stuff on the 75orless review site (if nothing else its quick!). This week I took a chance on a Chicago band called "Radient Darling".
Fronted by Ami Saraiya, daughter of Indian immigrants, this band melds trip hop with scratch jazz and a little bit of Bollywood. Much like Sufjan Stevens and The Decemberists have taken indie pop in various directions, this takes a different and equally compelling path.
Sample songs: http://www.radiantdarling.com/listen.html
"Versadh" is a bit unique for the album in that it starts off with an a cappella Indian chant (that with headphones bounces from ear to ear), then transitions to a smoky old jazz sound with South Asian drums in the background.
"Familiar" is the other sample song, more representative of the album as a whole. A bit more jazz & trip-hop, but still retaining a bit of South Asian beat.
"Pull You In" is on the sample page but isn't on the album, though would fit well with that album with its somewhat trip-hop sound.
There is something strangely mesmerizing and irresistable about this album. It wasn't like anything I'd heard, to the point that I half expected to regret shelling out the meager sum to download it. Now I can't stop listening to it.
The album can be purchase as MP3s for only $5. The CD is still only $10, and you get to download the MP3s immediately as well. The MP3 download includes a PDF of what appears to be the CD inserts as well.

Its been awhile since I've come up with anything for this thread (still listening to all the great stuff from last year), but I've been hearing more and more about this guy:
Jos Gonzlez (http://www.myspace.com/josegonzalezmusic)
Before you jump to the conclusion that this is sort of salsa music: this guy is from Gteborg, Sweden. His style is more folk, and while its unfortunately common to compare any decent male solo voice/guitar to Nick Drake, this is one guy who deserves the comparison.
The link above is to myspace, with 4 songs streaming. His album, along with some 4- and 5-song EPs that include some other good tracks, is available at eMusic (http://www.emusic.com/artist/11590/11590136.html). Yeah, you can get it on iTMS, but for the price of iTMS you can download it, Belle & Sebastian's new album (http://www.emusic.com/album/10896/10896363.html), and a couple of other albums. And it'll be MP3 so it'll play on anything. And it'll be 192kbps, not 128. Yeah, eMusic rocks.
Edit: while trying to get the To Elliott from Portland (http://www.emusic.com/album/10895/10895071.html) Elliott Smith tribute to show back up on the main page's new album list, I came across some good stuff from The Minus 5 (http://www.emusic.com/artist/11577/11577786.html), which has been getting a little press lately. Sufjan Stevens (althogh not a discovery for me, been a fan for ages now)

btw Jose Gonzalez is great!
# 44 Re: Great indie discoveries
I had a little extra time today, so I decided to check out the hit-n-miss reviews at 75orless.com. Their reviews are...you guess it..75 words or less, so most of the time is just listening. That's where I learned of Radiant Darling, Angeles Drake and some other good stuff that there is absolutely no way I'd have heard of otherwise.
First, 13 Ghosts. I don't even know how to describe these guys. Badfinger plays Beatles chords with your neighbor's garage band? There are sample tracks from the new album here (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/13ghosts), and full tracks from older albums here (http://www.13ghostsmusic.com/sounds.asp). You can really hear the progression. The thing about indie records is, the samples you hear are usually the best of the album; the fifth sample off the new album was so-so...so I'm not sure. The other four were very good, and the samples from the previous album were subdued but great.
The Steady Hand, by New Radiant Storm King (http://www.emusic.com/album/10896/10896142.html). Only 30-second samples, but they make me wonder why I've never heard of these guys. I guess they've been around quite awhile and have have some lo-fi roots, but any lo-fi that was there before is pretty much gone now. These guys are rocking! I think the guy from 75orless put it right, "The Steady Hand is the sound of 'indie' musicians unafraid to grow into something magnificent." I'll have to download it to know for sure, but looks to be one of the best so far this year. Between this and Jos Gonzlez I really need to sign up for eMusic again.
BTW, I got to hear the full album of Jos Gonzlez's "Veneer". Its not Nick Drake, and as it goes the whole album isn't as good as the MySpace samples, but its still quite good.

I've been really obsessed with Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" which was originally released in 1998 but was reissued in 2005. Fans of Magnetic Fields or any of Stephin Merritt's other projects should check it out.
Also I was just introduced to Jens Lekman. He's on the iTMS, you can listen to samples there. Another indie pop gem.
Digging the Sufjan Stevens album too, especially that first track :)

Both of those (Neutral Milk Hotel & Jens Lekman) are on eMusic, too. Sufjan Stevens, too. It'd be nuts to get them from iTMS.

# 49 Re: Great indie discoveries
I got an e-mail from a lounger who wanted to know what good indoe blogs are out there to find music. I started at mysteryandmisery.com, but they've mostly ended up directing me to others that I now prefer:
Stereogum (http://www.stereogum.com) - I guess these guys are a pretty big music blog. Not as much music as others, but its pretty funny from time to time. Apparently dissing Kevin Federline is a hobby there. Seriously, I had to use Google to figure out who Kevin Federline even is.
My Old Kentucky Blog (http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com) - I never really got this guy's mascot of Superman with Colonel Sander's head, but he posts a lot of music, some of it very good.
75 or less (http://www.75orless.com) - The intent here is to review records in 75 words or less. It makes for quick reading, and really the important part is that most of them link to actual music. And most of that actual music is actual songs, not 30-second clips. I freakin' hate 30-second clips.
SonicX (http://sonicx.com) - This isn't a blog, but it cross-references music posted on blogs. So if you want to (for example) find Jens Lekman songs, you search there and find over a dozen. Then you listen to 'em, and keep the ones you like. :)
A lot of finding new music is the exploration process. Sometimes you'll be looking for one band and happen across another. I think I first found the kentucky blog through a search on sonicx. And all the blogs have links to dozens of others.

# 50 Re: Great indie discoveries
There are countless blogs out there, some good, some better, some skippable. In addition to the ones bdb mentioned, gorilla vs. bear (http://gorillavsbear.blogspot.com/), and sixeyes (http://www.sixeyes.blogspot.com/) are a couple of popular ones.
The Larry Page (http://www.thelarrypage.com/)'s "Hobby Box" recently turned me on to these guys: The Essex Green. They're a Brooklyn-based band with a mellow poppy 60s-ish sound. A bit Belle & Sebastian-like. Their new release is scheduled for late March - the track I heard "Don't Know Why (You Stay)" sounds promising. Their previous efforts are available on emusic.

Basically his previous EPs are included in the compliation along with a few other tracks. I like most of the tracks; right now I like Maple Leaves the most. If you already have the EPs, then you probably should just download the extra tracks. For me, the is first my Jens CD, and I am quite pleased with all the tracks.

Here's a great indie discovery I made a couple months ago, but failed to report here:
Day Action Band
dayactionband.com
A wonderful, folkish indie pop band from North Carolina. I was honestly blown away by these guys when I first heard them, they've grown to become one of my faovorite new bands.
Now, I got into them when they had two full albums hosted on their website. Nowadays they only have their one album, "Girl With Gun" hosted for free, but there are also "Old Songs Of the Month."
Check out the website at dayactionband.com and get the free album by throwing in an email address here: http://www.dayactionband.com/signup.html
Enjoy the new music!
# 54 Re: Great indie discoveries
i'm sure many of you have already heard, but the Decemberists are no longer indie. They signed to Capitol earlier this year I believe. I really hope they keep doing their style and hopefully their first major label release will be as good as Picaresque.
# 55 Re: Great indie discoveries
Some of the majors are offering very unrestrictive signing deals. Colin Meloy said their contract had all sorts of "at band's approval" statements, and they don't expect to do anything very differently. Death Cab's contract with Atlantic was apparently similar.
Seems like big labels are becoming increasing indie from the production side, but less and less decent from the consumer side. It makes it a little awkward for consumers.
bdb at 2007-11-15 18:27:06 >

# 56 Re: Great indie discoveries
yeah, maybe major labels are starting to figure out that if you try to change these artists too much or dont let them go in their own direction, then they will lose the huge base of fans that many indie bands have built up over the years (Death Cab, Decemberists, Belle and Sebastian etc.).
they are also figuring out how popular indie music really is.
# 57 Re: Great indie discoveries
Anyone heard of Crystal Skulls? A friend of mine pointed me to a couple of tracks from their upcoming album "Outgoing Behavior." I hear a little Minus the Bear, maybe Badly Drawn Boy? Either way, they sound quite good. I hear their last release "Blocked Numbers" was stellar.
# 58 Re: Great indie discoveries

Mazarin, a great indie-pop group from Philadelphia with Orange Juice listed as one of their main influences (big points!). French History buffs might also be amused.
Been hooked on Another One Goes By (http://www.mazarinband.com/03%20Another%20One%20Goes%20By.mp3)
Wonderful upbeat guitar-pop with a sweet voice to match. Reminds me of Orange Juice's 'Rip It Up' mixed with some 80s brit-pop guitar, with a hint of Brian Wilson.

Bring It Back is a *great* album - my favorite of 2006 so far.
Also on Barsuk, I've recently been introduced to John Vanderslice's, latest album Pixel Revolt (http://www.barsuk.com/shop/bark044). I don't remember hearing of him before, but I like what I hear now. There are some free downloads floating around on barsuk.com for those interested in a taste.

I keep meaning to get Rocky Votolato (http://www.barsuk.com/shop/bark049)'s latest. I still have those songs stuck in my head since hearing him in concert.

Some that i just 'discovered' and currently listening to:
Broadcast - (Tender buttons album) A good electro-rock sound, nice female voclas and a nice listen..
Thee More Shallows - Sounds a bit like 'grandaddy' in a way...Listening to 'A history of sport fishing' atm, liking it alot..
Islands -(Return to The Sea) A band that was founded by the former unicorns frontman,Nick Diamond.. a very nice refreshing listen imo, enjoying after a couple of listens..
Others that Ive been listening to and worth a mention:
The Mercury Program (awesome, listen to the track 'the secret to quiet', thats the first one i heard and i got hooked)
Black Mountain
Built to Spill
Crystal skulls
World Leader Pretend
The Most Serene Republic
Sam Prekop
Fruit Bats
Tarkio (Decemberist frontmans old band i believe)
Destroyer
Mice Parade (Loving these!!)
Eef Barzelay
Alright...thats enough now I guess, but check some of these out if youve never heard of them, you never know!
# 72 Re: Great indie discoveries
I have to say I'm really enjoying the new album from Built to Spill, "You In Reverse". Not exactly "indie" (they're on the Warner label) or a "discovery" (they're fairly well known), but a good indie sound nonetheless.

That said, anyone hear of "The Cat Empire" - they're an Aussie band whose sound is kind of hard to genre-ify (yes, it's not a word) - high energy jazz with lots of Latin influence, maybe? Interesting and fun, should be a good sound for summer.

Summer is here, and its time for some laid-back music for sitting in the sun and sipping something cold.
Thao Nguyen - rootsy, bluesy, cool, acoustic indie folk.
Her website: http://www.thaomusic.com/
Hear and download: http://myspace.com/thaomusic
Hear (2-minute) samples & buy the CD: http://cdbaby.com/cd/thaonguyen
(If you're not familiar with CDbaby, about half of what you spend goes to the artist. Which is pretty cool.)
Tunng - an interesting blend of acoustic & electronic. Some of their songs are such a mishmash I just wonder why they even bother. Others are nothing short of great. A few select songs, and you have the perfect soundtrack for cruising on the fat-tired bike with the feet up in the air. There's a wonderful cover of Bloc Party's "Pioneers" at this blog (http://iguessimfloating.blogspot.com/2006/05/comments-of-inner-chorus.html).

# 101 Re: Great indie discoveries

I'm not claiming expertise, but I think this usage may be a little sloppy. Country music can be 'indie'. Indie, in the strictest sense, just means that the artist is signed to an independent label. With that definition, it's not in the same logical category as other types of genres, like hip-hop or country. Since usage of the word has become more common, people have taken it to mean that there is an indie 'sound', and this definition makes the name is more comparable to our conventional genres. I'm not exactly sure of the soundness of this definition, because many accepted indie bands have varying sounds, compare the sound of...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead to Lali Puna.
Another tack on can take is saying that indie music is 'uncommercial' music, but that's very shapeshifting as well, IMO.
On the direct topic of this post, Lali Puna and the Notwist make excellent music. :)

# 102 Re: Great indie discoveries
It is a little hard to define indie these days, aside from the purist designation by label. Often its something to do with an unconventional sound, minimal production, and various attributes (e.g. few hooks, long guitar riffs) that don't make it play well on pop radio. Example: Built to Spill has been on a major label for a few years but their music almost sounds live, and the opening track on their latest CD is well almost nine minutes long.
But anyway, I'm with Sypher on this; I can't think of a single reason to call Julie Roberts indie, at least based on the samples from the first few songs on that album. It just sounds like country to me.
On the Lali Puna recommendation: gotta love those German electonic bands with funny names (and funny album covers with cartoon animals is a plus)! It reminds me of one of my favs, Pappelallee by Naomi (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=3718772). I've only been able to find that album on iTunes. Heard about a great quartet based in Austin, TX - great music town, been enjoying Oh No! Oh My! lately - called For Those Who Know. The sound is described as shoegaze pop, (my, these genre classifications can be mind-boggling) comparisons to Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. I'm not great at classifications/comparisons, but these guys have a good sound. The lead singer's delivery reminds me of the guy from British Sea Power. I've been listening to II by Espers (http://www.emusic.com/album/10945/10945751.html) a lot lately. Kind of dark & brooding, but that's just my mood sometimes. :)
I've also been playing Juana Molina (http://www.juanamolina.com/) a lot - maybe not exactly indie, since its all in Portuguese (I think!), but very nice electro-folk. I'm really getting into the odd electro-folk subgenre, and playing a lot of older stuff like N. Lannon (http://www.emusic.com/album/10828/10828013.html), and Blusom (http://www.emusic.com/album/10860/10860741.html). I'm completely baffled why the whole indie world didn't go completely gaga for those.

I can't believe I forgot about these guys: Arab Strap. (downloads (http://www.arabstrap.co.uk/content/eng/media.html)), (eMusic (http://www.emusic.com/artist/11486/11486195.html)). This Scottish duo has spent much of the past decade dealing in the tawdry subjects of doomed relationships, dishonesty, booze, sex, regret, and hazy monday morning hangovers. The lead singer mutters in a slurred Scottish accent as if he's just recovering. But above all that, they churn out music that is painfully honest, often languid & dark, occasionally strangely optimistic, and (nearly) always backed by stunning melodic beauty.
Its the hardest music to describe...but its what I often find myself going back to.

I had heard some buzz about this band, but completely forgot about checking them out. My Latest Novel (http://www.mylatestnovel.com/Le%20Homme%20Page.htm). I got my hands on the album yesterday, and am officially in love. This will (or should) definitely be on some best-of lists. They're like Belle & Sebastian (and not only for the Glaswegian connection) meets Arcade Fire meets Sufjan Stevens but more melancholy. Dunno how to describe, but check them out!

Yes, they're selling at around $25 here in the US. I had a family member bring it for me from the UK over the weekend. It's a great CD. I'm not sure if it'll make its way over here as a domestic release, but in the meantime 4 of the 10 tracks are available to download on this blog (http://goodweatherforairstrike.blogspot.com/2006/02/artist-profile-my-latest-novel.html).

Recommendation of the week(end):
The Album Leaf. I've been drawn to this type of music lately, am liking the album "In a Safe Place". Too tired to write my own description this late, but here's a link to his site (http://www.thealbumleaf.com/index.php?textNum=2) and Sub-Pop (http://subpop.com/scripts/main/multimedia.php?key=bandname&value=Album+Leaf%2C+The) for a couple of mp3s. There's a new release as well.
# 122 Re: Great indie discoveries
I guess if I had to describe The Album Leaf it would be something like "dream pop" or "downtempo". A lot of it is instrumental, though sometimes he brings in guest vocalists. His work differs from a lot of downtempo in that it uses more real instruments along with the synthesizers. Its great stuff. "Into The Blue Again" is due out on September 12th.

Its been awhile. I noticed I hadn't mentioned Venice Is Sinking (http://www.veniceissinking.net/home.asp), another band I'm planning on downloading further from eMusic. Its a bit like Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, which has been discussed recently. Also new stuff from The Hold Steady (http://www.emusic.com/album/10962/10962800.html) sounds pretty good (a lot more rockin' than Venice). The new album from Sparklehorse (http://www.myspace.com/sparklehorse) is great, too (but their website is horrible)!

I've been paying Princeton (http://princetontheband.net/) a bit of attention recently. They are twins who play a merry acoustic set in the vein of Architecture in Helsinki; a steady stream of hand-clapping is thrown in there for good measure. You can find a couple of mp3's on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/princetonmusic) page.
Anyone with any thoughts?
PS - The song The Indifference Curve is something I am studying at university currently so I was pretty nostalgic when I saw it.

I noticed I hadn't mentioned Venice Is Sinking, another band I'm planning on downloading further from eMusic. That one is a great recommendation, I really dig their sound. Another reason to re-up with emusic. Thanks!
I recently acquired Diane Cluck's album 'Oh Vanille/Ova Nil (http://importantrecords.com/images/content/release_pages/imprec049_release_page.htm)'. Maybe not exactly indie, more on the singer/songwriter folksy side. The vocals are incredible with nice harmonic structures, and the music is very pretty.
# 131 Re: Great indie discoveries
Diane Cluck's previous album is on eMusic, too. Sounds a lot like Julie Doiron.
I liked "Careless Boy" by Princeton. Good stuff.
I hear My Latest Novel's Wolves will be released in the US at the end of the month, so I'm waiting for that. They're listed on eMusic here (http://www.emusic.com/album/10947/10947428.html), but its not available for download in the US. In fact, if you're in the US they won't even show up on an eMusic search (unless you're a little crafty). I want to get all but a couple of songs. "When We Were Wolves" doesn't sound that great in the 30-second sample, and "Wrongfully, I Rested" seemed to have the one guy going "bom bom" over and over again. But who ever knows with those stupid samples...blogs have really spoiled me in the ability to hear an entire song before I buy it.
bdb at 2007-11-15 19:44:16 >

# 132 Re: Great indie discoveries
Good news about the US release, with any luck these guys will get some good exposure here. You're right about "Wrongfully..." - it's one of the weaker songs on the album, but "When We Were Wolves" is a great song. I haven't heard the clip to which you refer, but if it's 30 seconds of the 'when we were wolves' refrain, don't use that to judge. It's really a great song. PM me if you feel like a more extensive sample ;).
# 133 Re: Great indie discoveries
Another goodie recently added to eMusic: Califone, Roots and Crowns (http://www.emusic.com/album/10964/10964383.html). Mostly acoustic-based, but with some really interesting percussion. Highlights (IMO) are Pink & Sour (http://www.emusic.com/samples/m3u/song/10964383/14548276.m3u) and The Orchids (http://www.emusic.com/samples/m3u/song/10964383/14548284.m3u).

About time for this thread to be revived!
A great indie pop band I've discovered recently (they're on emusic btw) is The Format. The sound reminds me a bit of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah crossed with Beach Boys, sort of. It's really fun, lots of singalong potential :D. Their 2006 release "Dog Problems" is an all-around great album. Highlights (IMO) are Oceans, Time Bomb, and Snails.
# 135 Re: Great indie discoveries
I've been all about the mellow lately (my friends and family are considering a namechange to Mellow McMellowson), and just got a fantastic album that really fits the bill. Yellow House from the band Grizzly Bear. This is their second album, released in September. These guys make some strange and wonderful music, not something you'll hear every day. The sound is very floaty with some of the oddest instrumentation I've heard in a while, but it comes together beautifully. Highly recommended! You can stream the full album in the audio section of their official website (http://www.grizzly-bear.net/). "Knife," "Marla" and "On a Neck, On a Spit" are standout tracks so far, but they're really all great.
# 136 Re: Great indie discoveries
Dunno if these have been posted before, but this is what I've been listening to lately, for those of you into indietronica:

Austrian: B. Fleischmann

Its been awhile, but I found something good: Tones of Town, by Field Music (http://www.emusic.com/album/10996/10996742.html). Got this following a tip from the eNewsletter by Eric Lawrence (KCRW).
This music reminds me of some of the progressive rock of the 70s, with a lush sound that a lot of music back then just didn't have. In some ways its all over the place, but it always manages to come together. Highly recommended!

^ I recently got Tones of Town. It's quite good, I like the band a lot, but it's not as good as their 2005 album, Field Music (also available at emusic). Very enjoyable.
In other news, I missed this one in 2006, but have been enjoying Island's Return to the Sea (http://www.emusic.com/album/10924/10924864.html)very much.
# 142 Re: Great indie discoveries
Malcolm Middleton of Arab Strap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Middleton) fame released his third studio album last week A Brighter Beat. I have not heard this myself but from what I have read it follows much the same formula as the stuff he did with his defunct band. Arab Strap fans will be able to familiarise themselves with the almost masochistic tale of relationships and sex. It has been said that Middleton's lyrics would not seem out of place on a suicide note, but do not let that put you off, the quality is superb :)
Another day, another Leeds five-piece. However, unlike the Kaiser Chiefs, iLIKETRAINS have some substance to their work without relying on evilly contagious gang choruses. The band's mood is perfectly matched by a dab of cornet here and there for good measure. The resulting experience is a very pleasant one, and I eagerly await their first full-length LP. Some of their work can be found on iTunes (at least in the UK store) and the band's Myspace can be found here (http://www.myspace.com/iLIKETRAINS).

Their music was such a bizarre combination of great music with slurred, dark tales of relationships done badly, guilt, resentment, and self-loathing. I have a lot of their music, and it is some of the most original, heart-felt, honest music I've ever heard. Unless you married your high school sweetheart and spent your entire life in the suburbs, anyone can probably relate to just a bit of this. Oh, and yes the quality is superb; these gut-wrenching lyrics are (almost) always accompanied by truly excellent music. :)

My Brightest Diamond is a pretty cool band (or person, really). They opened for the Decemberists when I saw them last weekend, and they were better than I expected. They're on Asthmatic Kitty records, but sound completely different from Sufjan, so don't expect it.
eMusic describes it as "Mixing elements of opera, cabaret, chamber music, and rock," and has it for sale, obviously. iTunes also has them.

So, you know how it is, there's this album that you have been meaning to check out for a while and finally you get your hands on it. Well that's the same sequence of events I have just experienced with Beach House's self-titled jaunt. It comes highly recommended from gorilla vs. bear (http://gorillavsbear.blogspot.com/), and there are some free .mp3s on the site if you do a little digging.
With the weather recently taking a turn for the good the album has come into its own. It is the perfect accompaniment to sun-kissed afternoons or soothing evenings in the garden. The melodies are superb, maintaining this dreamy quality throughout its short duration. The promised of The Sound of the Summer!!! is often misplaced, but to Beach House it is perfectly applicable.
Has anyone else heard it?
neb at 2007-11-15 20:01:38 >

# 149 Re: Great indie discoveries
Beach House are... exquisite is one word that comes to mind. I may have mentioned the album in the best of '06 thread; if not, I should have. The tunes are soft and supple (can you use 'supple' to describe music?), overall a gorgeous lush sound. Tokyo Witch is such a great song. More 'listening to the percussive sound of raindrops on the roof' mood music than 'soothing evenings in the garden' to me, but then again, we don't get that many garden evenings in this crowded metropolis ;) .

I'd heard of this band before, but somehow I just never bothered to look into them. Maybe the samples on eMusic didn't really clue me in on how good this was. Its definitely on my list for my next eMusic visit!

Second recommendation in as many days, it's a wonder I have anything else to be getting on with. This band is called radicalfashion and their wonderful album is called Odori. It's comprised of soft piano undertones which simply force you to listen.
It's an instrumental album, and weighs in at 35 minutes long, but do not let either of these details deter you. The notes are lush and transcend the listener into a world of powerful natural forces. It sounds as if the notes are documenting the life cycle, with particular reference to plants. It speeds up, and then slows, as if it were paying tribute to the weather. Every now and again the band input an abnormal sound, such as ticking clock, as if to remind you that the natural and unnatural are two very different entities.
I've had loads of fun with this album, and it's perfect background music.

if you get the chance to see them/her live, do it. It's better than the studio stuff. They/she opens for The National here in NYC in late May. Unfortunately, the show is sold out :( , which leaves The Broken West or Doveman as alternate supporting-band options. Oh well, maybe next time.

I'm trying to piece together one good CD from Future Clouds and Radar (http://www.emusic.com/album/11029/11029665.html). It appears to be two CDs, with enough good material to make one really great one. The 21 minutes I've downloaded so far have been outstanding. Check out Young Galaxy (http://www.arts-crafts.ca/younggalaxy/index.html), a Canadian indie (shoegaze?) pop outfit whose new s/t release, on the rarely disappointing Arts&Crafts label, is just wonderful. The band have garnered comparisons to groups like Stars (a member of which it features), but since I like Stars and really enjoyed 2004's Set Yourself on Fire, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Young Galaxy is available on emusic. Standout tracks: Lost in the Call and Lazy Religion, but they're really all very good.
edit: I heard the non-album track 'The Golden Coin' off their Swing Your Heartache EP on XM's The Verge (a great new-music source for me lately) the other day. It's a must-download. I really can not stress enough how awesome these guys are. The album is really shaping up to be one of my favorite of 2007. Get it, get it, get it!

Never a truer word spoken. Saw MBD support Sufjan Stevens in Glasgow last year and they were brilliant, but I was very disappointed with their album. The whole album was really down and dirge-like. I thought the production made the songs a lot weaker.

I know I have mentioned them before but I feel as though I need to stress the band Battles once more, just in case you weren't listening! Monday saw the release of their dbut full-length LP Mirrored. The band have been described as the finest example of Math Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_Rock). Their style is unique and best sampled very loud.
It's an album you have to completely immerse yourself in. Complicated time signatures are met with playful choruses and juvenile screaming, as songs meander though the more trying part of the music scene. Songs take on the mantle of epics, quite often out-lasting 6 minutes - the result often being very enjoyable.
I am really interested in anyone who has listened to it, and has a comment to make. So what are you waiting for? :p
