Just a word of advice since this is your first post: if this thread is going to be an easy reference for people and be at all meaningful, you're going to need to collect all the information people provide and compile it into your post so that people don't have to search the entire thread. So, for example, you should take zsmith66's contribution of the DMB CD and add that to your list. That way, people on need to look at your post to see the list of CDs that have copy protection.

As my contribution to this thread, you can add:

4. Sarah McLachlan: Afterglow Live

some that have been making the threads:

Velvet Revolver - Contraband
Foo Fighers - In Your Honor
Switchfoot - Nothing Is Sound
Coldplay - X&Y
Alicia Keys - Unplugged

Also, search through the "Copy Protected" thread that is stickied in the music forum. If anything this is a bit of a duplicate, though the other doesn't have a list. Preferably, the list would indicate the restriction methodology that is used.

A couple of months ago, Sony/BMG announced that all new releases would be copy-corrupted by the end of the year. EMI is the other label that is notorious for it. You should expect that any releases from those labels have a good chance of being hosed.

3. Dave Matthews - Stand Up

Didn't the band provide instructions for how to get that cd on your ipod, because they didn't approve of the copy protection? I don't think this should effect your purchasing decisions, I haven't yet found a cd that can't be put onto my ipod, and I have a lot of "copy protected" cds.

It was Switchfoot that did that. On the Sony Music forum, no less! AFAIK, Sony deleted that later.

They're reasonably easy to get around now, but they might not always be. Unfortunately, consumers won't stand up for themselves and refuse to buy these CDs, so they've given the labels their approval to keep doing it.

I do think I remember DMB doing this, but like Switchfoot, it was deleted. This involved ripping to WMA then burning to a CD and re-ripping into ACC/MP3 in iTunes. Of course, this is a hastle to do, and you lose audio quality.

7. Switchfoot - Nothing Is Sound

Yeah, that was a bummer. Supposed, sony came out and said that putting DRM on that CD was a mistake, and the new CDs don't have it. Again, just hearsay.. I think I read it online somewhere.

I bought it online.. so didn't hurt me any :)

I managed to put In Your Honor on my iPod by ripping it in WMP and then putting those songs into iTunes and converting them to mp3's

Add "Z" by My Morning Jacket to the list.

I'm really torn as to whether to buy this. This is an absolutely outstanding CD, one of the best of the year. At first it was a no-brainer: crippled CD, I won't buy it. But after reading the disclaimer from the ATO website, I'm not so sure: "Neither we nor our artists ever gave permission for the use of this technology, nor is it our distributor's opinion that they need our permission. Wherever it is our decision, we will forego use of copy-protection, just as we have in the past."

I may just go to the concert to see if they'll be giving out un-crippled ones.

Mary Mary - (Self Title) Mary Mary

So far the only Copy Protected Cd I thought about buying. I might just buy it off of Itunes.

Buy the cds of the artists you like! Copy-protection is a very young technology, not only is it possible to get these cds onto your ipod, in most cases it is as easy as turning off autoplay on your drive before you insert the CD!

And it doesn't bother you that you're providing the justification and funding for the technology to mature?

# 14 Re: COPY PROTECTED AND ENHANCED CDs LIST
I don't know why but I own a lot of CDs with copy protection (Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief" is an example) that have copied to my iPod perfectly well. Because of this, whether or not a CD has copy protection has never been a factor in deciding what CDs to buy.

However I agree with the idea that it is a ridiculous thing to do to loyal music buyers. As well as pointless, because it seems to be always possible to find ways around it.

# 15 Re: COPY PROTECTED AND ENHANCED CDs LIST
Since this thread has turned into a disscussion. If I buy a CD I think it should be my right to listen to it the way I want to and ten years later if I want to listen to it again I want to be able to pull it out and make a recording of what ever media I am using at the time. I have CD's that I bought when cd's first came out (giving away my age) that I can pull out now and record cd quaility music to my ipod. I don't want to have to do some trick to get my music to my ipod. This is a win win for everyone except the person that buys the cd, Itunes makes money because you have to buy the music from them(why do you thin they are getting in so good with the recording labels). I do not download music for a couple of reasons. The music does not sound as good and you do not get a cd to keep for the future. The cd company thinks they are keeping everyone from copying there cd's for folks to give to other folks. Like it was said there will all ways be a way to get around it. They should go for the people that are making the illegle cd's and prosacute. You would think with the poor guailty music and the price of a cd they would be doing everything they could to get you to purchase. I have not bought a protected cd and do not plan to. The only way this is going to stop is NOT TO BUY A COPY PROTECTED CD. This is simply greed from the cd labels and Itunes (apple). jm2cw

If you like country (probably not as I don't see many posts out here) you can add

Chris Cagle - Anywhere But Here (and unlike Velvet Revolver that took 2 minutes to hack, this one took some time...I still won and it's on my Ipod)

**btw - Foo Fighters -- In Your Honor (dual disc version) is not copy protected and will rip right from ITunes. Only single disc is, must not be able to content protect the dual disc format...yet?

The CDs with Sony's invasive (and sometimes destructive) XCP rootkit "copy-protection" are listed at:
http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004144.php

Pretty funny to use the word "protection" to describe a scheme that can destroy the owner's property.

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel

Though it seems not to be working very well. I didn't notice 'till I studied the cover carefully.

EDIT: Blur - Think Tank and Robbie Williams - Escapology
neither of them very effective though. Think Tank was a little difficult, but no match for the black boardmarker.

I've played the USA version of Think Tank on XP, w/no problem. Maybe its just the European version?

I thought all Sony CDs now are copy protected?

# 22 Re: COPY PROTECTED AND ENHANCED CDs LIST
Sony announce last year that they would have copy-protection on all of their albums by the end of 2005, but that was before the XCP fiasco.

donkeyman: Alicia Keys "Unplugged" is on Sony's Mediamaxx 5 list: http://www.sonybmg.com/mediamax/titles.html. I don't think that list has been updated in a couple of months, though. What you need to do is remove Sunncomm's Mediamaxx: http://www.sunncomm.com/support/tools/uninstall3.asp (note this only works with Internet Explorer). Then from that point you'll need to either disable autorun or hold the shift every time you put that CD in the computer. You'll probably also need to use something besides iTunes to rip (e.g. EAC, Audiograbber).

# 23 Re: COPY PROTECTED AND ENHANCED CDs LIST
FYI, the info presented here (http://www.dsg.cs.tcd.ie/~haahrm/copying-protected-cds/) also works for removing XCP. Just be sure to disable autorun and/or hold down the shift key as it loads (being a little paraniod, I did both).

The best way to deal with XCP if its Sony (like this was) is to get a settlement from http://www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com/, though. I'll get a replacement CD, an album download from iTunes (unfortunately they had a short list to choose from), and $7.50 in cash. Not bad considering I paid $5.50 (shipped) for the CD!
