How to convert audio CD to iPod comparable format?

Hi everyone,
i am new to this forum and new iPod user, too. i am learning French, so i would like to convert my audio French CDs to any iPod comparable format and listen them from my iPod. can you pls advise me on this...

The easies and most straightforward for a begininer possibly being iTunes.

For best all around compatibility, encode to MP3 format.
