Takes a tad longer than 8 minutes for somebody to post most of the time. I recommend checking back in about 24 hours. But to humor you:

Dark of the Matinee
Kickin' video, kickin' beat
I like to dance wildly. Addiction to what?

"do you want to?" - i love the way they start off with a different song, then it just kicks off and the main track makes you wanna get up and dance.

nice to find they havent succumbed to the '2nd album syndrome' ;)

The lead singer Alex. You can infer it from the video "Do You Want To"

Pitchfork Media, often referred to simply as Pitchfork, is an internet publication devoted to music criticism, focusing primarily on the world of independent music. Pitchfork was created in Minneapolis in 1995 by Ryan Schreiber, an obsessive music fan who at the time was a recent high-school graduate with no previous writing or publishing experience. Still, influenced by local fanzines and college radio station KUOM, he aimed to provide the then-fledgling internet with its first regularly updated resource for underground music.

As Editor-in-Chief, Schreiber has made Pitchfork an extremely successful source for daily music news and album reviews: It now garners upwards of 120,000 visits daily, and more than 1,000,000 unique visitors per month. Pitchfork's fully searchable album review database consists of more than 7,500 reviews, containing in-depth analyses of virtually every major independent release since the site's inception. Other helpful features include the site's Best New Music section, which features a succinct rundown of the staff's favorite recent releases, and a features archive containing countless interviews, think pieces, and lists of the staff's 100 favorite albums for every decade stretching back to the 1970s.

Pitchfork is, however, sometimes criticized for its use of pretentious and heavy-handed metaphors. Pitchfork's review of the Radiohead album Kid A is often cited as an example of the bloated technique.

Archduke Francis Ferdinand, assassinated in Sarajevo, by a Serbian member of the Black Hand, a serb nationalistic group. It's claimed that it triggered WWI, but probably just started it a few weeks before the inevitable outbreak..

And that's where the band got their name.

To elaborate a tiny bit Dan,

The band took their inspiration for the name from a racehorse they saw running on TV, called the 'Archduke Ferdinand'. This lead the members to consider calling themselves 'Archduke Franz Ferdinand'. It was shortened soon after...

Cool song. Switches between two or three parts.
Don't understand.

edit: "The primal, brooding guitar attack of "Optimistic" stomps like mating Tyrannosaurs." From the Kid A review. Not an image I really wanted to ever think about.

yeah i would say so. its just a little different to their first album. they seem to have taken more influences and i feel its more of a broad album than a collection of great singles. have a few more listens and let us know what you think

Most definitely. On the subject of their influences, don't you agree that 'Fade Together' sounds alot like a Paul McCartney/Beatles song? The whole time i was listening to it i was thinking "wasn't this on The White Album"?

# 53 Re: Franz Ferdinand Fans!
Due to getting a music review spot in a local newspaper I've given their new album a listen.

Initial thoughts:

- Nice striking guitar, good to see they're retaining their "Gang Of Four sound" (Post-punk style)
- Tracks are not as memorable or catchy as those from their debut, only 'Do You Want To' seems catchy, but even that doesn't compare well to 'Michael', 'Take Me Out', 'Jacqueline', or 'Tell Her Tonight' from their first album
- There are definitely signs of the Beatles in this album with 'Eleanor Put Your Boots On' and 'Do You Want To' has moments in which it sounds like it's from the Beatles' untitled "The White Album"

Overall I felt it was a pretty decent album that had its moments, but could be better and it really doesn't seem to have many highlights compared to those four gems which came from their debut. However, 'Eleanor Put Your Boots On' does show promise as it shows a different side of the band, which I think could be good...

Thoughts?

# 54 Re: Franz Ferdinand Fans!
Personally speaking, I think Franz's sophmore effort is an outstanding success. I like it just as much, if not more so, than their self-titled debut. To my suprise 'Do you want to' is not even one of my close favorites on the new album. That honor goes to 'The fallen'(you gotta admit the ending is cool!). :) I also really enjoy 'Well that was easy'. The fact that it suddenly changes time right smack dab in the middle earns brownie points with me. 'Evil and a heathen' is really good too even though I must strain to hear Alex's voice clearly. The distortion is deliberate, so it doesn't bother me. I enjoy all the the Beatle-esque songs as well.

ps- I think I am one of the few Franz fans that doesn't like 'Michael'. Maybe it's because that's my younger brother's name. *ick*
casa~la~rocka at 2007-11-15 18:21:29 >
# 55 Re: Franz Ferdinand Fans!
To be honest Franz Ferdinand are not one of my favourites anyways. Their debut (with the exception of those four tracks) bored me at moments. However, I had to do a mainstream album for the review (my others are more 'obscure' or simply older).

I'm curious if there are any Gang Of Four fans in this thread as they were one of FF's biggest influences. One of my other albums is Entertainment! by Gang Of Four, which is from 1979. I'd recommend that to any FF fan, great post-punk.
