consolidated library issues-need to delete ALL references to itunes!

Hi
I recently use the consolidaton feature to move all my music[53 gig] to a new drive.
The problem is that when i try to play the music from within itunes some plays but a great deal have an exclamation mark indicating the file cannot be found and requiring me to locate each song on my new drive...a real pain!
So,i must have done something wrong in the consolidation process.
I think i need to spring clean and was thinking that if there is a way to clear every itunes file i could reinstall itunes and then use the add folder function to allow itunes to see my music again.
I am not bothered about loosing ratings, playcounts and so on.I would rather start afresh with a clean install and learn to manage my music properly.
Any ideas?
I did a search of the site but couldnt find anything.
regards

You can delete the songs from iTunes w/o deleting them from the computer. Highlight all (edit>select all) then right click & select 'clear'>then read the box that opens & says:

Do you want to move the selected iTems (including those purchased from the Music store) to the Trash, or keep them in the iTunes Music folder?

Only files in the iTunes Music folder will be moved to the Trash.

Then it will give you three choices:
Cancel>>>>Keep Files>>>>Move to Trash

Select the "Keep Files" option. The music files will remain on the computer but be removed from iTunes. Then use the file>add file option to repopulate from your music folder.

Thank you!!
It not only worked but recovered another 3 gig of music that Itunes couldnt see.
God knows what i have done to loose that music.Perhaps it was when i was using wm10 to play music after itunes 5 was released and it caused my system to crash.I used wm10 to search for music.Perhaps i "lost" the music as a result.
Anyway many thanks.

I installed a new drive and the above instructions worked great. However, my playlists are now all blank which is not a surprise. Is there any quick way to recover?

Thanks,
Glenn
