iPod Nano tubes review - With PICS

Hi all

I just received my iPod Nano tubes today.

Initial Impressions: The black box which the tubes came packaged in exude a sense of professionalism, somewhat different from the lightheartedness of the iPod Socks packaging. Opening the box, I was greeted by a nice rubbery smell, which I can describe to be something like that of an eraser. The tubes have a bit of a powdery surface and they feel quite good to touch. Unfortunately though, there is no screen protector as many of you might have alredy known.

Use: I chose to use the white one for my 4GB iPod Nano. No instructions whatsoever were included in the box, and I can surmise that it due to Apple having created a product which is just so easy to use. I just slipped the iPod in. One noticeable advantage about using the skin is it gives the user improved control. There is now a more tactile feel to the scrollwheel, and this can be attributed to the fact that there is a smooth little groove surrounding the clickwheel. The centre select button is now also easier to click. In short, Apple's engineers have definitely done some careful research. In fact, with the tube, one can now feel where the click wheel is, so that it is even easier to control the music when the iPod is placed in one's pocket. At the back of the skin, the Apple logo and the trademark "iPod" word is carefully carved into the rubber. One can now "feel" the apple logo .

Conclusion: A great product, though it is quite expensive. Furthermore, the other colours included seem a bit too childish, and Apple should have included Black colour, or some other more stylish colors instead. Of course, Apple charges a premium for their product, but it is somewhat understable when you take into account that they provide an unparalled user experience second to none.

Is the white one clear enough so you can still view the chrome back of the Nano? Or is it opague/cloudy? How are the tubes with respect to attracting lint, dust, etc? How soft are they?

You can view all the engraving, serial number and stuff like that through the skin. However, the skin is quite opaque, so the back is no longer chrome and shiny anymore. Compared to the iSkin which i use on my Mini, the nano tubes dont attract as much dust.

Thanks for your prompt reply! Just one more thing if you don't mind: how thick is it? Does it add appreciably to the thickness of the Nano?

Hey Derrick, I'm from Singapore too. I don't think you have a need for so many skins. Are you willing to sell me your pink one? Email me at hoyanchan@yahoo.com.

hmm. by looking at the nano tube, dose it seem like it would be possible to cut down a PDA screen protecter to a little bigger than the nano screen, apply it to your nano, then stick the nano into the tube?

or maybe just cut the screen protector the size of the tube window?

yes, iPreston, why not? I intend to use my Brando protector which covers the whole front with it.

Well, Derrick never replied me, so I got the tube from someone else. It feels really good, smooth, unlike the iSkin I've got for my 4G, which feels sticky. It really keeps dust and lint off much better than the iSkin. It's stiffer too, so I had a pretty hard time slotting the skin on, but it clings really tightly, which is a huge plus. This is probably one of the best silicone skins you can find anywhere, and it's really not that expensive if you're able to sell off the extras, or just buy one from someone else. I'll post some pics tomorrow, gotta sleep now.

I took a bunch of pictures, but I can't link to them cos I'm not an "established member". My nano is white in pink tube, it's for my girlfriend actually, I'm a guy, I don't use pink stuff. Anyways it looks terrific, too bad I can't show you.

Wow...the tube on your white nano looks awesome...almost like its glowing or something. I might have to return the zCovers I just bought and get the tubes instead. I would just use a small screen protector/overlay with the tube to protect the screen.

You could still use the tube but put on a clear film protector for the screen under it.

Sorry for the delay, I've pmed Jtgarcia413 the links to my pics. One of my pics shows the top of the tube. I haven't seen it mentioned before, but there's no cut-out hole for the hold switch, it's rather a protusion thingy that you just have to push to work the switch. Very nice, one less hole is always good, and it makes the switch easier to use cause you can don't have to use your nail.

Thanks for the pics. Too bad they are mostly blurry. Maybe there is a switch on your camera for close-ups?

I just received my pink one (bought it from j4y_7 right here on iLounge!) and absolutely love it! It is the color of bubble gum, and very smooth feeling. I want to echo what the original poster said about the scrolling -- the tube's design really does make the scrolling easier and you could easily find the clickwheel and do what you wanted to do without removing it from your pocket. Very intuitive design. I put on a Martin Fields screen protector (which I am replacing with Power Support Crystal Shield when it arrives, as my Martin is covered in fingerprints) so the screen is safe for the moment.

Given the reported issues with zCover scrolling (unlike with the nano tubes, the zCover does not use a thinner rubber for the clickwheel, rendering scrolling more difficult) I really think the Apple tubes are worth serious consideration -- if you can get them, that is! My only adjustment is not looking at the gorgeous Nano without protection.

And of course if a pink Nano is announced tomorrow, look out! I just may have to buy it!

Thanks for the nice review of the tubes. If you could post any pics that would be great. I have the zCovers coming in a couple of days and so will have to see whether I have any problems. People seem to be really happy with the tubes and if I don't like the zCovers I may get them. But the online store says 4-6 weeks!

I know it is a ridiculous wait for the Tubes -- I was lucky to score a spare color from someone who already had them. But I too was intrigued by the zCovers (I liked the lanyard option) and I will be interested in your thoughts once you get them.
