Why I moved to Nano
I just placed my order for iPod Nano and thought I'd put my reasoning on record for those who are considering a move to Nano.
I've owned a 3G 30Gb for 2.5 years now. I really love the product and it has served me well. But it has its shortcomings. I originally bought it with the intention to keep most of my music on it. I quickly learned that fitting 60 gigs (83 gigs now) of music on an iPod isn't gonna happen any time soon. I also realized there's no need for this, since I rarely take 44-day long trips where I have no access to my computer.
Also, the form factor of the "normal" iPod is too big for me. I can't really fit it in any non-jacket pocket, and I hate the geeky look of my belt-clip at the gym. And the iSkin I have adds to its bulk, although it has kept my iPod looking like brand new all this time (should get a decent price for it).
But my biggest complaint has been the battery life. Most of my music is 192kbit (ie. big files) and the hdd has to spin more than with the usual 128kbit files. I barely get 3 hours of real use out of mine. Of course, I've had it for quite a while now, but even the original 6 hours or so was too little. I would have to conserve batteries when I'm travelling/flying which kinda defeats the whole purpose of owning a portable music player.
So, I am moving to Nano. I'm calling it an upgrade. 4 gigs of music gives me 600+ songs / 2 days worth of music with my bitrates which is plenty. I can tuck it in my jeans or workout pants pocket. And best of all, I don't have to worry about batteries dying on me on long trips.
Damn, that turned out longer than I expected. What were/are your reasons to moving on to Nano? Or why aren't you?

# 1 Re: Why I moved to Nano
The main reason for me is size. I just like the idea of being able to take my favourite music with me anywhere, without the feeling of it getting in the way etc.
Plus of course there is the fact that it looks amazing, which doesnt hurt at all :-)

There's a lot of people who think it's stupid to get a nano when you can get a 30 gig video enabled iPod for only about $50 more.
However, I tend to agree with your reasoning. I've never owned an iPod before and was torn over which one to get. I ultimately chose the Nano because I have a computer w/ an xtra firewire drive for my video media and all my music. I'll never need more than the 600 songs I will be able to fit onto a Nano. The size is what sold me. When I was in the store, I slipped that little beauty into my change pocket. That's right. It fits in the change pocket of my jeans. perfect.

Size is my main reason also. The fact that it looks so cool doesn't hurt either. After having 1G, 2G, and 4G iPods (still have the 4G), I have learned what my listening habits are and have finally realized that I don't need to have my entire collection with me all the time. I tend to listen to the same stuff over and over again, and I only have about 4 or 5 hours to listen each day, so 4 gigs is plenty for that.

For road trips...it's hard not to like having lots of music choices. School and home are 3.5 hours away for me, so musical moods can change. For walking to class, the nano (on the way) and the shuffle (current daily warrior) are much nicer. If I could only have one ipod right now...it'd be a tough call between the uber thin 5g and the nano.

Yup, size DOES matter. Same reason. I had a bulky 30g Zen jukebox. Excellent, but it was too big for the gym, I didn't care for the hard drive, I rarely listened to entire albums, and it was a hassle to carry in my back pocket (although having a self- replaceable charged battery with me was a nice luxury).
I really like the Nano, but it's ashame they didn't make the battery self-replaceable so you could always have a charged backup to pop in. Hey, Steve knows how to make money on these things.....
