Help! Battery problem? Too short!
I did a battery test on my new iPod nano because I thought the battery was "draining" faster than I'd expected. So I charged it up and played it until it stopped when no battery was left. It lasted barely 8 hours! Battery became red at barely 5 hrs, then 3 more hours, and it stopped.
Isn't it supposed to last up to 14 hours, or at least somewhere close to 14 hrs? During the test I played songs in order, minimal backlight, and all the stuff to prolong the battery. And it lasted 6 hours short of what was expected.
What should I do? Battery problem? Or something else?

are you sure the battery was fully charged before you started?
what about EQ settings-those are supposed to drain it faster.

Make sure you disable backlight, do not any any EQ at all, set volume to approximately 50% for realistic battery life. Also, don't come into contact with the click wheel, and let the playlist counter do the time lapse for ya. You should pull off at least 10+ hours on the first try, as long as it is on a full charge.
The battery also needs to calibrate itself, and after sufficient full charge and discharge cycles, it should improve over time.

Hey guys. Long time reader, first time poster. I got my nano about 2 weeks ago and have noticed that during the day, I seem to drain the battery fully. I have it on sleep with hold on during class, and when I do use it, it's on 5 second backlight, no EQ, with medium click wheel usage. I decided to test the battery last night, set it on to repeat one song (clearing the playcount to 0 first), backlight off, no EQ, hold on. I go to sync it this morning after having drained the battery, and the song I chose to test was still showing a 0 playcount. I know for sure it did play, don't know why it doesn't show in iTunes. Awesome site, please help if you can!

I know I've asked this before, but how do you do a battery test?

i think that if you want your playcount values updated in itunes when you synch your ipod to it, you'll have to have it set on automatic synch and not manual. using manual synch wont update the playcounts or ratings or whatever.

just charge it full (make sure its really full, charge it for at least 3 or so hours), and then let it play. time it until it dies. personally, i would just leave it playing on a desk and check back every few hours or so. and make sure you note what your settings are (backlight time, eq usage, etc.)

i had it set on automatically manage playlists. i don't know if it's a flaw in iTunes 6 or whether my nano loses the playcounts its gained for a period of time before running the battery down.

i did another battery test last night, same settings, and it happened again. charged it up with my wall adapter for a couple minutes to avoid syncing on no charge, and when i did connect it to my computer, the song still showed no playcount in iTunes. has anyone else had this problem? i know something must be wrong with my battery, because i've had to give it a full charge every night on account of being in the red. yeah, the indicator isn't accurate and doesn't claim to be, but when my battery continually dies every day with about 3-4 hours max usage with no EQ, 5 second backlight, and minimal click wheel usage, i'm just about ready to send the durn thing in for service.

My nano is about a month old and when i did my battery test it lasted for more then 14hr. I stopped the test at 14hr.
You could call apple and ask for an exchange.
