nano price

Hey does anyone think that now that the new ipod video is out that they need to drop the price of the nano. I mean the 2gig is a hundred dollars less which is a good amount of money but why would you pay 249 for a 4gig when for fifty dollars more you can get a 30gig. I was going to buy a 4gig nano but now I feel like it would be a rip off. Am I the only one who feels this way.

no reason to price drop. demand is already greater than supply.

it'll be a rip-off if all you want is the newest thing on the block. it won't be a rip-off if you want a smaller size and flash memory.

It's not about the newest thing on the block, it's just simple math. I don't understand how consumers would feel comfortable with the dollar to gig or is that people would much rather have flash memory? If it is flash memory than ok I get it. I need education what is the difference between hard drives and flash memory, I think hard drives are likely to have problems.

i dont think prices will drop, i will bet next year apple will update the nano with an 6 or 8gb flash chip for the same price... you'll get more storage for price as time goes on, but prices probably wont fall.

well, you don't hear people complaining that the powerbook needs to be half the price of the powermac b/c its half as slow... with laptops you pay way more per feature (cpu, screen size, storage, gfx card, etc...) than desktops because of the portability. likewise, you pay more per gig for the nano b/c of its greatly increased portability.

even if the 4g nano were $350, i'm sure people would still buy it simply b/c the 4th or 5th gen ipod isn't as convenient. (likewise, i'm sure some people wouldn't buy the nano even at $100 b/c they just put it in their bag all the time anyway and would rather have the extra storage.)

flash memory in this capacity is still new, and as such, the $/gig ratio is high. as Moore's Law takes affect, the ratio will begin to benefit the consumer. leading to either higher capacity Nanos at the same price point (given Apple's pricing structure), or Nanos with more features at the same price point (more than likely the former rather than the latter). also, keep in mind Apple got a substantial discount on this flash memory, which alone is causing an anti-trust probe. if this hurts Apple and Samsung, who knows what would happen. might drive the prices down across the board, might jack the prices way up, might not do anything.

from the consumer's stand point: if you're looking at flash based players, Apple is competitve with their Nano. as a matter of fact, it's the only 4 gig flash player you can buy (i believe iAudio makes a couple 2 gig players, but can't remember). that pretty much seals the deal right there.

you can't realistically compare the Nano and the iPod because they are not one in the same unless you broaden your definition to simply "mp3 players." there was a thread posted recently about the difference between flash players and HD players. the ony difference i can ever remember off the top of my head is that flash memory is resistant to shock; as in, if you drop it, or shake it, it's less likely to be damaged.

size matters...

this is the debate i had when i bought my first ipod. i was looking at the mini vs. 4g 20gb. cuz it was the same prices: $249, $299.

you're point was exactly the one i made. i couldn't justify buying the mini cuz just $50 more, i could get 16 more gigs!! so that's what i did.

but recently i bought the nano and sold away my 20gb. it comes down to what are you using the ipod for?

i realized that i only listen to the same few albumns every time, therefore a 4gb nano was good. plus, i go to the gym a lot and the small size is perfect for me.

so why buy the nano if there is a new video ipod? well, are you gonna need that much music space? and are you actually going to use the video function?? sure it's nice to have, but i'm a working guy. i can't watch videos while at work. and if i go home, i can just watch videos on my tv or computer. it just doesn't suit me.

Thanks guys I see your point when I bought my 1gen mini I never considered a larger capacity iPod, just don't need that much music to go. I guess it is the same situation.
