Video on a Nano? ever going to be possible?

im a little down right now on the fact that the new video ipod just came out, with a 30Gb drive no less, and i paid $263 for my Nano, while this new super ipod is only 300.

so heres the idea. ive seen a 4th gen photo ipod play video's, can the Nano? i want to put video's on this thing.

any programs neccesary(sp?) i can get. just some one please tell me its possible. i know it wont be as good as the old one, but i just cant justify spending another 300 bucks a week and a half after i got my nano.

lets do it guys! lets figure it out!

return the Nano. Best Buy has a 30 day return policy. I called them today and they said I could exchange my Nano when the new iPods arrive. I dunno how much that helps you though.

kinda doubt it will ever happen, since the video decoding is almost certainly made possible by a special chip (similar to the chip on most graphics cards that make real-time dvd decoding a cinch). maybe the next nano will have the chip added, tho i can't imagine what it'd be like to watch video on such a tiny-resolution screen!

well, i read a review that said the 4g ipod 'photo' has the exact same chipset as the video ipod, and had the video decoding feature disabled. I suspect the nano has a video decoding feature, that could be tapped by a firmware update or some kind of hack.

but i agree about the practicality and novelty of wanting to watch video on a screen like that.

the ipod photo has a different chipset from nano (check the ipod on linux (http://ipodlinux.org/Generations) page). it has also been strongly rumored that none of the pre-5g ipod chipsets used have enough horsepower to do real-time h.264 decoding, even at 320x240 (check out this ars technica page (http://arstechnica.com/staff/carthage.ars/2005/9/20/1307)). While it may be possible to display a series of jpg's at 30fps on a nano, i don't think real-time h.264 or mp4 decompression are part of the nano's chipset.

having said that, once the 5g hits the street and is dissected, we'll soon know exactly what chipset IS being used, and whether its the same old PP5020 or something new.

Yeah, only $50 more for 26 more gigs isn't a lot, but to me, you pay a premium for a much smaller form factor. Personally, I've used a 4G 40 gig for working out and it sucked. It was too heavy. I see that the new ones are thinner, but they still weigh over 3 times what the Nano does. I don't even feel the Nano in my pocket because it's so light. To me, it's worth the price.

Think, Do you honestly need to watch video clips on your Ipod :/
It just makes your battery die quicker. ALOT quicker.
