Would you recommend a nano to a first time ipod user?

I am going to be a first time iPod user. For my first I am eyeing the nano. It's small, it uses flash memory (which I am lead to understand is nifty). Now I also see a lot of complaints about it, that worries me. So I was wondering if I should purchase a different kind or if I should go with what I want and try not to fear other's horror stories?

Get it. Unless your scared to have a few scratches on it. I mean come on ITS A FVCKING MP3 PLAYER not a diamond ring. I dont flash mine around at school to make people jealous so I dont care if it gets a few scratches on it.

yes you should get it, if for any reason there are problems with it you should get apple to service it. although most of the times apple puts up an argument on the the service of your iPod. such as batteries for it. they'll probably keep going on the phone for hours about how the service doesn't cover this and that. the only way you get service in this situation is if you tire them out and make them give up.

if it fits your needs-list, then yes, get it. just keep in mind that A) there's a good chance it will get scratched, and B) there's a miniscule chance you will have a defective screen (but Apple will replace it).

haha, nice reasoning. "get the apple service plan, even though its a pain to claim anything on it."

i am a new ipod user, and i bought one sight unseen. i havent taken the plastic off yet, till some case comes out. its perfectly usable with the plastic on the front.

most likely you'll want some sort of case for it becuase without it, you'll have to carry it in your hand...

i would actually say no, not for a first.

for a first i recomend either a mini( can get a 4gb for 160)

or a used one, of maybe the 4th gen, no color.

but if you have $300, i would say go with the 20gb color, it will serve you better.

I just received mine on Tuesday. I completed one of those freebie sites and and the option of receiving a 4gb nano or the 20gb iPod photo. I went with the nano, because I don't need to store too much music.

I am a first time iPod owner, and completely satisfied with this thing. I have a decalgirl.com decal on it. I didn't put it on right away though, and got just a few little hairline scratches on the back. The front is still (and will remain) in mint condition, because I care for my gadgets very carefully.

The ONLY reason I would have for regretting not getting the 20gb photo is because I can't transfer photos to the nano, and the screen isn't large enough to really see photos in great detail. If you're really into photos, then maybe the 20gb would be good for you.

But for me, this thing is just about all I could hope for. I have it with me almost all the time (except school, because they won't let me use it there for music). Right now it's resting on my stomach playing Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring via the classic white ear buds.

Go for it!

Just FYI, you're paying extra for the extremely small size and flash based memory of the nano. If that is one of the main things you're looking for, get it.

If flash based memory and small size isn't a top priority, then you should look into getting a different ipod... not that hard of a decision, if you ask me (as long as you're not getting swept up in the hype of the nano, that is)

Actually, I would definitely recommend this purchase for a first time iPod user. It's small enough to cart around--just use a case or cover to ward off scratches. You can carry around a good amount of songs for the gym, work, hanging around, listening in the car, etc. It has the photo option, and that's wonderful on the nano. I have a 3G that now looks and feel ancient because it's not color.

I think this would be a great first time purchase in the ipod category.

My 4 gig white nano is my first iPod, and I already can't live without it. I ordered a decalgirl.com skin as soon as I knew I was getting it. Then I got some of the cheap vinyl from Walmart to cover the screen. Protection complete! As far as for use, I have the music I listen to most, a few pictures that I need to keep near and dear, and plenty of room for my favorite news programs via podcast! All in all, I am much happier with it than I ever expected to be!

Buy one!

I just bought one. I watched my popularity rise when all the chicks wanted to lose it to me and i was the coolest cat ever. Just kidding of course. But buy it and flash it around to make people jealous.

I think I will pick one up. It has everything I need in one. Hopefully they sell them at a place such as BestBuy, I don't much like buying off the internet unless I absolutely must.

I assume things such as the Dock and Wall Charger must be ordered online though. Those arent as important though.

Thanks for your input ^_^.

It's my first ipod and I love it - Although, i've only really just synced and carefully tested it out a few times. I've yet to test it in actual everyday in-pocket use... waiting for iskin duo or apple tubes so i feel safe taking it around with me.

# 15 Re: Would you recommend a nano to a first time ipod user?
I purchased my Nano a bit over a week ago, and am happy with it. This is the first iPod, the first Apple product, and the first music player that I have purchased in a few years (in the past, I have owned a MiniDisk player - that's five years ago - and two $20 CD players). Doesn't take too long to get used to it, and I am happy with my purchase.

Which issues are you mostly concerned about?

I'm worried about the screen durability. I can take good care of it, but I don't want to have to "baby" it. That is about my only concern, aside from all the software issues that perplex me. I also don't know if I need to specify Mac or PC when buying it, or if it doesn't matter.

I don't mind some scratching, it was meant to be carried around. Heavy scratching would bother me, but hopefully I could avoid it. I take fairly good care of my electronics without having to put too much effort in to it.

I don't want to have to use a case to make a portable device portable. Maybe in the future for convience, but not at first.

Also I am concerned about having to navigate a large collection of music on it. I have no idea how menu navigation works on an ipod. I worry that it may be difficult, or time consuming, to locate an individual song.

oh yeah - i forgot to mention my nano is my first apple product and first mp3 player as well.

To answer your first question, no there's not a mac or pc version, all nanos work with both.

For the screen worries, since the screen is under the same plastic as the rather scratchable body, you may want to re-think the no case thing. I'm looking forward to using the iskin nano duo skin since it will protect the screen and won't add much bulk to the unit.

oh and i don't think you should worry about song library navigation. the ipod click wheel and nav system is time tested and is probably the best you could hope for in a portable music device.

After reading LOTS of posts since 9-7, I have to say one downside of the Nano, it's maybe TOO small and lightweight for its own good. It compels u to just thow it in the sack and forget it. With my mini, it reminds me it's there. To me, this is the only tough decision, based on the concerns listed. The other stuff, like Windows or Mac are totally NON ISSUE.
