3G ipod not recognised by PC?

Hi

I've had a 30g 3G ipod for about a year now, its been working fine until a few months ago. The problem is that wehn I connect it to my PC using a firewire cable, it doesn't show the 'do not connect' screen anymore. It charges fine through the PC, but itunes doesn't realise my ipod is plugged in, neither does my PC meaning I can't put songs onto it. Most of the time it doesn't work I find, but if I'm lucky it'll be recognised if only for a short amount of time. Could anyone tell me what I can do to solve this problem? its getting really annoying, is there something wrong with the ipod or my PC?

Thanks

Jonathan

If commiseration helps, I've been through a similar situation with my 40-gigger. First it was flaky on my home machine, but ok on my work PC. Finally it seemed to hang the system on both machines. I ran iPodUpdater at least three times, but the problem kept resurfacing.

After finding out a new one only cost $50 more than the repair fee, I bought a new one.

New one works a-ok - tlthough now I'm in to it for about $400 plus tax, since I decided to go for the 60-gig video...

But here's the zinger: Just this morning I plugged the old one into my home PC and it seems tb working normally (i.e. recognized as a disk drive, iTunes started up and was updating the iPod when I left for work... and the system wasn't hung.

Time will tell, but if it keeps working - and works on my "work" PC - I've got to wonder if the whole thing was just some system issue on my PCs...

Thanks for the response. I'll probablys just keep using my ipod and listen to stuff already on. Next time I think I'll get something more reliable. =P

Or maybe I'll get lucky and it'll work. Can't really afford to get a new one.
