Battery problem? And another question.

I bought an iPod off of eBay, a 3G 40 GB. I can charge the battery throughout the night for 7-8 hrs and I can go to school and play with it casually for 2-3 hrs at max before the battery is on the edge of dieing, is this a problem with the battery meaning that I need to get a new one or would it be something else?

Also, another question - is there somewhere out there to get original iPod covers? like not cases, the actual cover of the iPod, because the front screen is scratched to (I think) unrepair or there's something on top of the screen/front (because it doesnt look like it goes into it) that will not come off.

Yes, the battery in the 3G is nearly dead. You'll need a new battery -- search eBay.com for "3rd gen iPod Battery" or similar and you can buy a replacement battery which you can install yourself (see here (http://ipodbatteryfaq.com/#2) for instructions).

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you need replacements parts for the iPod then you should check out iPod Mechanic.com (http://www.ipodmechanic.com/)

First off, congrats on your purchase. I have a couple of questions:
1. What music format are you using
2. What bitrate are your songs.

If your songs are in the mp3/mpeg-4 AAC format and are at the 192kbps bitrate or less, then you should get around 8 hours. Keep in mind that you probably will not ever get 8 hours with the standard Apple battery, you will get around 6 hours. I would restore your iPod, charge it, then try doing a battery test. Make a playlist this is longer than 8 hours. Set your iPod's volume to 30%, start the playlist, then don't touch your iPod until it shows you a low battery warning. The iPod's battery meter is very innacurate and likes to report false results. Don't go by the battery meter when doing the test, wait until you see a low battery mark.

If you get 6-8 hours then it is fine. You can purchase a 3rd party battery for around $45 that will give you around a 12 hour battery life. You can purchase a new iPod face plate but I don't recoment it. You will have to do some wiring.

If there are scratches, knicks, and pits, you can use Braso or iCleaner. Braso will get rid of the lighter scratches but iCleaner can get the deep scratches on both the front and back of the iPod.

my bitrates are all over the place considering I didnt rip all of them myself, and I'm using all Mp3 - also would having a folder of over 4k songs make it hard on the iPod to search and then cause bad battery life or no? Forgot about that one.

Do I want an Li-Ion battery or will a Li-polymer battery work? cause those are on eBay - 950 mA li-poly batteries...for like 20 bucks.

If you want an "original" iPod battery with the 8 hour battery life then get the li-ion. The extended battery life 3G batteries are li-polymer. Here is a link to the specs for a extended 3G iPod battery. This means that you can get up to a 12 hour battery life instead of the standard 8 hour.
