iPod Remote & Earphones Question

I have a question about the Apple iPod Remote and Earphones; i.e. these:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71207/wo/Gs6ApneCeqqq25Xdg3C25zc6d9m/1.SLID?mco=142C6EC5&nplm=M9128G%2FA

The question is, are the earphones integrated into the remote? If not, is the "Out" from the remote a standard minijack? I was thinking that I'd like the remote functions, but I don't really care for earbuds. If I could plug my Sony MDR-Q55s into the remote and have the best of all worlds, that would be aawesome. So... what's the scoop?

Well, the link you have up there doesn't work. If you were browsing the educational store then we cannot view what you were looking at. However, the iPod remote and earphones have the same functionality for all generations. The earphones are not integrated into the remote. You can plug any earphones you want into the remote as it is a standard minijack.

Sorry if the link didn't work. Try this one:

I've also been reading some pretty negative reviews for this product. What are people here experiencing?

OK, that remote will do what you want. I don't know what those people are talking about. I had a iPod remote for my 3G iPod for one year without any problems and I now have another iPod remote for my 4G iPod. It has worked fine since the 4G iPod was released in 2004. Just take care of the remote. Don't expose it to water, hit it with a hammer, drop it on concrete, or jab it with a screw driver and you will be fine.

Edit: spelling

Edit 2: I recomend getting the remote from Apple's education store, not from the Amazon online store as they seem to be only selling sued ones.
