ipod updater
I am trying to update my ipod software as the old software is not compatible with iTunes 5 and I cannot therefore transfer songs from my iTunes to iPod. The problem is when I try to install the ipod updater I am told it is disabled and I can't install it. Any ideas?

If your getting an error message please post exactly what the message says. Are you downloading it from the Apple site?

No, it's not a message. When I go through the process of installing ipod updater, I get to about the 5th step (after choosing which drive to install it on) and then it won't allow me to choose the ipod updater option in order to install it. All the options are greyed out and I can only choose "Go back".

This is exactly what is happening to me. Look at my posts in the Mac iPod Problems forum in the thread Can't update iPod.
so far no luck, have you had any luck??

what OS are you using?

this is what worked for me.
the installer thinks you already have the updater installed. If it is not in Applications/Utilities then find the Receipts folder and delete all of the ipod receipts. Then the installer will work and you can run the updater.

I have gotten the same message about my iPod software being too old. Some music wasn't transfered over, etc.
I did find that when I deleted all of the iPod receipts from that folder, the installer worked. So, naturally, I took my iPod and tried to get it to work on the computer. I got the same message as before.
This is really starting to get on my nerves.
I'm glad that there are more people with the same problem. I'm wondering if there is something else I can try to get this thing to work.

I'm not glad y'all have the same problem that I do because I want you to have problems. I'm hoping that it will happen to someone smarter than I, so I might hear of a solution.

The second part of the solution for me was that once I got the updater installed and ran it I got a message saying the updater did not have the necessary firmaware.
That only happened if I clicked the Upadate button in the dialog window. When I selected Update from the Tools menu on the menu bar it all worked.

I didn't get any message about firmware. I was able to run the updater, install the software, etc. without the previous problems I experienced. I tried to download and install the updater 3 times.
The first time, it wouldn't let me because it said I had a more recent version already installed.
The next two times, it just greyed out the options after I chose the HD to have it installed on. The only option I had was "Go Back".
This final time (after deleting the receipts) everything seemed to work fine. However, when I tried to update the iPod, it's as if I didn't do anything at all.

After you install the updater on the computer you have to actually run the updater to update the firmware on the iPod.
