Ipod Mini 6gb problem

When I connect my ipod to my computer it says it needs to be reseted. So I'm not able to see it in itunes. Is there a way to transfer all my songs on my computer before resetting it? because in the opposite case, I will have to upload my cds AGAIN on my computer and it's freaking long

Why would you reseting your computer mean you have to lose all your songs? Explain a bit more, please. :)
