Tape adapter vs. fm transmitter

I have a tape adapter but am curious if an fm transmitter is a "step up" or not...I know a direct connection is better but I can't spend that kind of money...

If you have a clear channel, the FM transmitter will sound better thna your cassette adapter.

Is what bbqhog actually correct?. Was hunting around the web just now and the reverse seems to be the case. Whilst in theory FM beats Tape, in the real world Tape Adaptors appear to provide a better sound output than FM transmitters (Even with clear channels).
Whats the consensus on this one? I am underwhelmed with the sound quality from my iTrip LCD and am considering getting a Sony Cassette adaptor.
