Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano

I've used the Belkin Auto kit and a sony cassette adapter for several ipods. The only one I wasn't able to use it with was the Shuffle.

Yesterday I tried using the same method with the Nano, and it wouldnt work. There was no output.

I has to remove the cassette adapter from the Belkin line-out, and plug it directly to the nano. Thats the only way it would work.

Anybody care to comment on the specifics of this problem? Whats different about the nano dock connector, because Belink cannot seem to extract sound from it, to use with its ampifier.

I searched and found that nobody had experience this problem yet, so any help would be appreciated.

Interesting, I was just about to order one of these from a site that claims "Compatible with the new iPod!". Anyone else have any success with the Belkin Auto Kit and a nano?

edit: I just noticed that the Apple online store lists this product as being compatible with the nano. Are you sure the audio output still works with other iPods and not your nano? And are you sure there isn't a problem with your nano dock?

I noticed that it's listed as compatible with the nano on both the belkin site and the apple site.

The belkin auto kit successfully charges the nano. But no sound comes out of the line-out. On my other ipods, everything works fine.

Is there a problem with my nano dock? I'm not using any docks, the belkin auto kit plugs directly into the ipods (nano, mini, 4G).

# 3 Re: Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano
Hi, I posted a similar question in the Accessories forum, but havent had many replies, so I figured I would try in the Nano forum, since this is regarding the Nano specifically.

I have a Belkin Auto Kit with a Sony Cassette adapter which for use in my car, which works perfectly with a 4G Ipod and a mini. I tried using it with a Nano and here is what i found:

-The belkin auto kit charges the nano

-the line-out on the belkin auto kit does not output any sound, so i have to unplug the cassette adapter from the belkin auto kit and...

-i have to plug the cassette adapter directly into the Nano in order to get sound (which by the way sounds way better than plugging it directly into the mini or 4G, but thats another story)

Anybody have any experience with this, or knows the difference in the Nano's internals that would cause this?

Thanks.

I was looking into this again and noticed Belkin's own press release states that this is compatible with the nano:

ww.belkin.com/pressroom/releases/uploads/09_19_05CompatibleNano.html

However they don't explicitly state that the line out works as advertised:

September 19, 2005 Belkins existing line of iPod accessories include devices that are both compatible with the iPod nano and are available in both black and white colors, such as the TuneCast II (F8V3080 and F8V3080-APL) and Auto Kit for iPod (F8V7058-APL and F8V7058-APL-BLK). These products are widely available in North America. Other new and to-be-announced accessories for nano will be available starting October 2005.

The TuneCast II, an FM transmitter that plays music from your MP3 player through FM radio waves, plugs into the nanos headphone jack. It keeps the dock connector, which is situated next to the headphone jack on the nano, accessible. The TuneCast II is available in both black and white colors, as is the Auto Kit, which charges the nano in your car...

I emailed Belkin support to ask if they have tested functionality of the line out with the nano, but I've yet to receive a reply. I'm hoping that csrx's case may be an isolated incident because this kit will work out perfect for my needs if the line out works.

On the topic of differences in the nano's dock connector port, I saw a nano playing through klipsch ifi speakers at a local store yesterday. This system plugs into the dock port on the nano and does not use the headphone port. This indicates to me that there shouldn't be any major differences and the nano does give a line out signal to other existing devices that connect to the dock port.

Cool, keep us updated. I've tried it with 3 different nanos and have gotten the same problem. I also have a GLI hooked up, but i doubt this is causing the problem. They probably just tested the charging feature.

Well, I've been having a somewhat comical conversation with Belkin support about their Auto Kit. Seems their customer support doesn't even understand their own products. Here's the emails so far...
Model: F8V7058-APL
1st Mail:
Problem: I am interested in using an 'Auto Kit for iPod w/ Dock Connector' (model F8V7058-APL) with an iPod nano. I have read reports that the iPod nano will recharge when connected to this device, but the audio out on the Belkin adapter does not output sound. Can you confirm the compatibility of this device with the iPod nano? Thanks.

1st reply:
Mike,

Model number F8V7058 will charge both the FM transmitter (sold separate) and the Ipod Nano.

Thank you for contacting Belkin Technical Support.

2nd Mail:
Roy,

Thanks for getting back to me, however you may have
misunderstood my question.

My question was NOT if Model number F8V7058 will
charge the iPod nano, but will the AMPLIFIED LINE OUT
jack on this model properly output sound from the
nano? I have read reports from users who claim the
LINE OUT jack works correctly when plugged into full
sized iPods, but not with the new iPod nano. Can you
please clear this up? Thank you.

Mike

2nd reply:
Mike,

The auto kit does not allow you to play any music to your car/home stereo. Model number F8V3080
is the unit that will. The auto kit will charge both the ipod and provide power to the FM transmitter.

3rd Mail:
Roy,

You told me that "The auto kit will charge both the
ipod and provide power to the FM transmitter." but
isn't that a different product? the 'Mobile Power Cord
for iPod w/ Dock Connector' Part # F8V7067-APL?

From the description on the Belkin web site of the
auto kit, model F8V7058-APL:
"The Auto Kit also provides an adjustable amplifier
and 3.5mm audio-out jack that lets you play your iPod
through your car stereo"

My question is does this 3.5mm audio-out jack provide
an output signal from the iPod nano? A report on the
internet is claiming that it does not for the nano
while it does correctly provide an output for other
iPod models. Thanks again.

Mike

3rd reply:
Mike,

You website states "Features a 3.5mm audio output that plays your iPod through your car stereo when used with a Belkin TuneCast FM Transmitter or Cassette Adapter."
Please read the complete statement posted on our website.

The Auto kit does not play allow you to play any kind of music through your car or home stereo. The auto kit is just a CHARGER. Nothing more. The FM Ttransmittier (F8V3080) will play music through your car stereo or home stereo, which will work with your iPod Nano.

Thank you for contacting Belkin Technical Support.

4th Mail:
Roy,

I know this is your own product, but I still disagree.
The Auto kit is designed to charge AS WELL AS provide
"a 3.5mm audio output" for dock connecting iPods. If
I connect my iPod nano to this product, I should be
able to plug a 3.5mm audio jack from it to my car
stereo input and hear sound. Others have not had
success doing this with a nano, but have with other
iPods. I am positive that this is what the Auto Kit
is designed for and I don't know if I can describe
your own product to you any more clearly. I am NOT
interested in an FM transmitter, but I AM interested
in a product with a audio output such as this - if it
works with my nano!

Mike

4th reply:
Mike,

We only have two different products that will allow you listen to your MP3 music thru your stereo. Model number F8V3080 and F8V366.

I will repeat myself. The auto kit DOES NOT allow you to listen to any music thru your stereo.
The auto kit is just a CHARGER. Nothing more.

Click on the link below. Read the information of the product. It does not state anywhere in the description that the auto kit allows you to listen to your MP3 music thru your car stereo alone. You will need the FM Transmitter.

5th Mail:
Roy,

I suggest you familiarize yourself with your own
product. Obviously we are getting nowhere since you
keep insisting that the auto kit is nothing more than
a charger. The product manual posted for this product
even states:
"Connect your cassette adapter, FM transmitter, or any
other audio equipment to the 3.5mm audio-out jack and
listen to your iPod through your car stereo or
portable stereo device."

I am absolutely positive that the Belkin Auto kit has
a 3.5mm audio-out jack IN ADDIDION TO the ability to
charge an iPod.

This is what my goal is. My car stereo has a 3.5mm
input jack. I should be able to connect a 3.5mm cable
from the Belkin Auto Kit's "3.5mm audio output that
plays your iPod through your car stereo" (quoted from
the product page that you linked to), to the 3.5mm
input on my car radio! Then I should hear my iPod
through my car stereo's auxillary input. Has this
functionality been tested with the iPod nano and does
it work as advertised? If you don't understand
this, I would appreciate it if you could pass this on
to someone else who does.
Mike
I'm still waiting for a reply...

# 9 Re: Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano
LOL, that was comical.

I dont know if the guy is really confused, or if he knows that it wont work with the nano, so he's intentionally giving you the run-around.
But in essence, he has confirmed my reports, the Belkin adapter only charges the nano (but he implies this is what it does with ALL ipods, which is wrong).

At first i thought it was just my nano, but i tried 2 other ones. But how come nobody else is posting about this? Maybe people arent really using the belkin charger with a cassette adapter anymore, theyve probably moved on to better solutions.

I'll await your response to see if i have to return the 3 nanos. I'm definately selling the 4Gb black nano, buying a 5G instead.

I'd also like to hear some other experiences. Hasn't anyone else here tried thier nano with a Belkin Auto Kit?

# 11 Re: Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano
csrx - I may have a solution! I was reading the Apple discussion boards and it seems people have been having varying success getting the nano to output a signal through dock connected devices. Some of these have started working after resetting the nano. This suggestion cured the problem some were having with another dock connected device...

Others have found that simply "resetting" the nano with it connected to the iCarplay fixes this problem , Peter. No need to go through a full "restore".

1) Plug in the Nano to the icarplay.

2) Set the station on the iCarPlay and the radio

3) Reset the Nano ( ie press the Menu and Select (middle) buttons) until the apple logo appears
Could you try the same 'reset' procedure as described above with your Belkin Auto kit and report back with the result? Thanks.

# 12 Re: Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano
there is lots of discussion on this particular problem here, including experiences with the Belkin auto kit.
htt p://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@134.Q8XgaAjgRYD.28@.68b91660/17

After reading this I am now fairly confident that you should be able to get your nano to work by doing a 'soft reset' as in the procedure described above.

# 16 Re: Belkin auto kit w/ cassette adapter doesnt work for Nano
I can confirm that soft-resetting the nano while plugged in to the auto kit allows it to work!

Also, I did some testing like unplugging then plugging back in, turning off the nano then plugging back in, and turning off the car, unplugging, then plugging back in and turning car on. After ALL the tests the nano still worked with the Auto kit!

This is great news, because *hopefully* I will only have to soft-reset once instead of every single time I get in the car!
