Homebrew Nano Remote?
Hey, I realize I'm going into kinda uncharted territory here, but I'd be willing to play around for a while to try and build a Nano remote using the dock connector. Am I right that somebody had reverse-engineered the serial pinout and how to work with it? I seem to remember reading it somewhere. I'd love to work off of that. Also, I think the original ipod remote is serial based, so would it be possible to adapt it to the dock connector?
Thanks in advance.

Since Apple dropped the remote port on the full sized iPods, all new accessories are going to connect to the dock.
I'm looking forward to some new accessories. A wireless (RF) remote will be nice.

umm, don't the new iPods come with a remote? Or is it IR?

That's an additional accessory. Apple's moving towards providing less and less "come withs" with every generation. Not that I can blame them. I never used my remote or dock and barely used the included ear buds. The lack of an AC adapter is a little disappointing, however.

In fact, the new remote won't work without the iPod being docked. Quite a shame if you ask me. I really would love an RF remote control, and if it could stream audio, so I could just keep my pod in my pocket, I'd be one happy camper.
I'm trying to decypher how the ipod remote works though, and how to enable serial communication to the ipod easily. We know that it can be done now though, as apple has done it with this new wireless remote/dock thing.

Although I dont have one, the only time i would need the remote would be when i connect it to our stereo. And when i use it with the stereo the battery drains fast so I would need a charging dock. So basically its a all in one device.

Yeah, but it's IR. No good if you want to leave the room.
I was using an iJet RF remote with my 60GB photo, and I could leave the room, go downstairs, etc., and still skip tracks, change the volume.. it's nice to have.
But now I keep all of my music on an external drive, and play it through my Powerbook.. so now I need a remote for it..
