According to the news item on the front page of this site, the 5th gen dock supports variable line out. At the risk of sounding like a n00b, wtf is variable line out?

Also, what are the odds that the dock will be capable of passing audio to both the line out mini jack AND the external dock connector? This could make for some nice looking car installs...
