Wheres the 80GB iPod 5G!?!?!?!
I am so incredibly dissapointed with todays announcement. I am hoping someone can clue me in on this, but where is the 80 GB iPod?!?!
The 80GB drive came out over a year ago! They make the iPod Video 5G, and keep the capacity the same! Why??
Does anyone know if the holiday season expects the 80GB to come out or are we going to have to wait another year?!
Thanks for any info or insight you may have.

well, if Apple will increase up to 80GB, you won't buy it only for $399. it will be likely $499 + tax. so will you buy it over $500? new ipod video uses only USB 2, not firewire. it seems to cut cost down by adding ony USB, the same capacity.
anywya, there is nothing you can do about it. you're not manufacturer.

Was the 80gb one of the new smaller sized drives? If not, that's why. Apple seems to have found that people who want smaller sized players outweigh people who want higher capacity players.

Most likely, the 80GB Hard Drive for the new iPod will be released a little later on, like the 6GB was released a few months after the release of the iPod Mini.
So maybe you won't have to wait too long. :)

Apple will probably release a updated 80GB 5G iPod just like they came out with the 60GB 4G iPod. Be patient. I imagine they will also release a widescreen TFT LCD on their future 5G/6G iPods as well. A 80GB drive has been released but it would be way too expensive. Apple would probably charge $499 for a 80GB 5G iPod. In a recent market analysis, Apple decided that the $399 price tag was the maximum people were willing to spend. Looking at past iPod sales, the $499 iPods were not selling a whole lot.

i wouldn't be able to fill up an 80 gb, would you? i know many people think they can but then they can't fill um an eighth of the capacity that they get.

I could easily fill up a 80GB iPod if I used the 320kbps mp3/aac format, AIFF format, wav format, or Apple lossless format. Are these insanely high bitrates needed for everyday playback? No.
Most people can't even fill up a 4GB iPod nano as they use the default 128kbps mpeg-4 AAC format.

My 30 gig is almost full ::sigh::

I rip my albums at mp3-VRB0, which is the highest quality VBR setting. My albums average around 80megs-100megs, and each track has an average VBR-bitrate between 230-280. I am buying a 60gig 5G iPod next month, and I will use that space. I know there are many people who use higher quality settings. There is a market for the larger capacity drives.

I would have liked to see a 80 gig ipod myself...I can easily fill a 40....and I come close to filling a 60. I have about 52 gigs of music...
# 10 Re: Wheres the 80GB iPod 5G!?!?!?!
i'm a little disappointed at the 80gb no-show as well, since i have almost a 100gb of music. but i guess people like me are a niche and apple found that targeting us would not be as profitable. apple already got some of us to buy the 60gb, so why not appeal to the mass market as well as us? to a regular person, 20 gb of music is already nuts!

Well guys, I am glad I am not the only one who has plenty of music to fill an 80gb drive. I have 60gb already on my computer and the 80 gb drive would give me some room to grow.
The question is... should I just buy the damn 60 gb now and sell it when the 80 comes out, or hold out for the 80 and continue my life with no iPod until such time?!
I hate that Apple doesn't let us know if something is in the works or not. Sux.
Thoughts?

Most of my music is at 192-224 kbps mp3 and i could just about fill an 80gb ipod staright away.

I've been patiently waiting for someone else to start this thread. Thank you, NCRobino.
Heck, I was going to be disappointed if they didn't pull a 100gb iPod out of their hat on Wednesday. When I saw they didn't even make an 80gb, I nearly flipped my wig!
Now that they flatted out the front of the iPod just to fit a big battery-sucking video screen onto it, I think I'm just looking for some techy genius to jerry-rig a 4th-gen iPod Color with a 80gb+ drive and a kick-butt battery. If you are out there, man, I have nearly a thousand dollars to throw at you!!!
# 14 Re: Wheres the 80GB iPod 5G!?!?!?!
I could fill two 80 GB iPods without even trying, but that's beside the point.
Apple learned with their initial introduction of the 60GB iPod (photo) that going over $400 is not sustainable.
$300 & $400 are pricepoints the market wants to pay en masse. So, for now, you're going to be limited to what Apple can sell for those price points at an acceptable profit, it's not any more difficult to figure out than that.
And the day will come when even the $400 will be generally rejected by consumers and the new tech will be limited by that pricepoint.

I sold my 30gig photo today for 200 and plan on buying the 30gig 5th gen tomorrow ;)
