Cleaning earphone cords
I use my white ex-71's during workouts and bike riding and the cord gets really dirty. I've tried cleaning them with Formula 44, alcohol, and dishwashing soap and water. All of these leave the cord, especially the smaller diameter cords that connect to the ear buds, very tacky and even a bit sticky, as if the cleaners have chemically 'softened up' the cord insulation material. This makes them attract dirt more easily, requiring more frequent cleaning.
What do you guys use to clean them? Is there something that will leave the cords 'slick', like when they were new?

How recently did you get your EX71's? If it was in the last 6 months, then you may have gotten a pair with the infamous "disintegrating cord". I'm not sure what material it is made of, but it disintegrates in a matter of months, so it may have reacted to the chemicals you used. In the rare occasion I do clean my cords, I typically use warm water and soap with a soft sponge.

Hmm.. I did a search for the disintegrating cord problem...apparently I have one of the faulty ones. The cord feels like silly putty and the insulation seems to be getting thinner and thinner. I also have a black pair of ex-71's and the cords are fine.

There was a post from a guy about his EX getting "melted" after repeated contact with sweat. I am thinking the EX's cord material is subceptible to everyday contaminants.
