EAC timing error CD drive goes crazy ??
OK Im new at this so be gentle
I downloaded EAC/LAME 3.97b1 everything was working fine archieving my CD's untill today I was trying to extract an older cd with scratches on it and about halfway into the extraction my cd drive sounds like its just moving back and forth and EAC pops up an error code "timing error" and it extracts @ 0.0 X or 0.1 X the whole time my drive is making the funky noise...
I set it up just as someone had posted on a tutorial.....
any ideas

Since the CD has scratches, the problem is narrowed down to your CD. EAC and your CD drive are fine, it is the physical condition of your CD. I recomend fixing the CD. You can purchase Skip Dr for $35 and it will fix the scratches on your CD. There are some free solutions that involve toothpaste but they don't work as well as the Skip Dr will.

ok.......sounds reasonable.......
I dont know if this will mean anything but before I found this site I put all my cd's on itunes and it recorded every one with no problem ??
is that just because EAC is more advanced and needs better quality cd's ??
I will buy a disk dr in the morn....see if that helps since most of my cds looks like someone took an S.O.S. pad to them

EAC is a picky encoder, especially is you use Secure mode as in the EAC guide. You could try using "Burst Mode" and see if that make a difference. Normally if EAC has a problem then iTunes will have a problem. I am guessing that you didn't have error correction turned on in iTunes. Using Burst Mode in EAC is kinda like turning error correctiong off. As long as the CD can still be read then it should be fine. If EAC comes across a large error then it will let you know. A Skip Dr would be the ultimate solution though.

Before you buy (but I think I'm too late)... try putting EAC in "burst mode" for reading the CD. This will not get you the accurate reading quality like in Secure Mode, but it usually gets through badly scratched CDs.
iTunes rips in burst mode as do most other rippers.
Just remember to switch it back after you've done it. I usually setup a seperate profile and just load it when I hit an issue like this and then load the main profile.
Cheers.

I think it is too late. I have to use burst mode for a couple of CD's that I have. Some of them are just too scratched fro Secure Mode yet Burst Mode is able to read them fine. I still experienced some slight popping noises on those CD's that could really only be heard when actually listening for them. It still annoyed the hell out of me.
I purchased a Skip Dr. and it fixed the problems. I initially tried the tooth paste method and a couple of other ones.
Just remember what shabbs said. Burst Mode might be an option if you don't want to use the Skip Dr. or don't have access to one.

HA! Does this ever work? I've never tried it personally.

If you fail at first,
try the burst.
Heh heh.

The tooth paste method somewhat worked. I was able to get further along in a problematic track but that was about it. Before EAC would stop ripping at 1 minute and 10 seconds into the track. After the tooth paste method EAC would stop ripping 1 minute and 15 seconds into the track. So I would say that it didn't work. It took Skip Dr two passes to fix the CD. After that I was able to fully rip the track in secure mode without any errors.
It seems like some of the myths on the internet are just that, myths.
