LAME 3.97 beta 1
Anybody else using this, I just switched to it as I gather it is slightly better than 3.96.1
Not tried it yet though, going to use it with the -V 2 --vbr-new setting to replace my usual --preset standard. The new setting is supposed to encode faster with just as good quality results. Will see how it goes.
Get it here (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html)

Glad to see LAME development continuing. I also have read that 3.97 has improved over 3.96.1. I'm, however, using AAC at the moment so this release is of less importance to me but it's nice to know that I can always rely on LAME to provide me with the best MP3 encoder out there when I need one.

I too started using -V 2 --vbr-new to rip my CD's with Lame 3.97b1 although I am not going back to re-rip my CD's. From the looks of it, 3.97b1 improves upon the Lame formula. Hopefully they will release 3.97b1 as the final version as everyone seems to state that it is already pretty stable.

Ha ha, not a chance. I've had enough of that.

Tried that (twice !!), but I always came up against some compatability issue. So I'm sticking to MP3 now.
On problem is that "-V 2 --vbr-new" is a bit of a mouthfull compared to "--preset standard". :D

Holds 3.90.3 for dear life
LOL, Don't be afraid. Live on the (cutting) edge a bit :D
I have to say I've used 3.96.1 for a while now and have not noticed any quality drop or artifacts in the files from my 3.90.3 files.
I have no qualms about going to 3.97 beta 1, I've trusted the diligent folks at HA so far and they've not let me down.

Yep. All of my music that I ripped is at the --at-preset standard setting with Lame 3.96.1 and I am not about to go back and re-rip them all. I just started using 3.97b1 and have only ripped Disturbed's "Ten Thousand Fists" with 3.97b1. Strangely enough, a -V 2 --vbr-new Lame 3.97b1 mp3 has a larger file size than a preset standard Lame 3.96.1 mp3. I thought that they would have decreased the bitrate of that setting but oh well
