iPod does not support files larger than 4GB?

I heard someone say that the iPod does not support files larger than 4GB. Is that true? It's important because when I get an iPod, I also plan on using it to download Linux from friends (and uploading my Linux ISOs), and some of the ISOs can exceed 4GB.

I've never heard this from a "using it as a disk drive" point of view. Which it how I assume you're going to shuttle the ISOs around.

I think the limitation (which I'm not aware of because I have no need to play a 4GB MP3) is only concerned with it's primary function; playing music.

If you mount it as a drive and use it as a drive, what does it care how big your files are? As long as you're not trying to "play" the ISO through it's music-player innards, that is.

The Windows file system used for the iPod is FAT-32, which does have a 4GB file size limit.

I'm not sure if the Apple-formatted iPods use HFS or HFS+, HFS also has a 4GB file size limit, but HFS+ does not (according to wikipedia).

You might want to start looking for something to split them up & restore them later (should be fairly common), or just burn at the source.

Is there a program that cuts the ISO into two pieces when copying to the iPod and then puts them together when copying to a PC?

yeah.. it's called an archiver :p
Seriously... just use winrar or winzip or whatever and break it into volumes

the iPod, used in disc mode, does support files larger than 4GB. I know I've put items that were 5GB in size on my iPod without a single problem.

^^^Yeah, I was just about to say that I have backed up files over 4gb on my iPod...(a few times it was my whole "My Documents" folder so that I could take it all over to my laptop)...

First ive heard of there being a limit:confused:

Formatted on a PC as NTFS it will take single files over 4GB but formatted as FAT32 it won't

If formatted as NTFS, will there be any problems?
