My 5G 30gig Hard drive is "clicking" and "scratching"
Hi all,
I enjoy this site and find it extremely informative. I recieved my 5G ipod about 3 weeks ago and have loved every minute of it :) Unfortunatley today i heard a sound being emited from the ipod itself when the hard drive spins. It is a small "click" heard upon changing albums, going between videos, whenever i load a playlist, etc... followed by 2-6 seconds of a slight scratching, "static", crackling sound only heard when i place my ear to the back of the ipod. This crackling sound is emited in short 1 second bursts, then subsides, the starts again. I dont recall ever hearing anything like it in the past few weeks. The only thing that i think I may have done to mess it up was to apply the Martin Fields screen (which is very excellent btw - and purchased based on this forum's recommedations ) in a slightly steamy bathroom. I'm no idiot, it wasnt anywhere near dripping wet in there,, so could a little steam have caused this??
Now the "click" is much more audible then the crackling, but neither is really THAT bothersome,,, since i cant hear it without my earphones and playback is still the same. Are these noises completely normal and i just havent heard them b/c i'm usually wearing earphones?
Am i paranoid? I swear it used to be completely silent, except that little vibration upon H/D spinning (which is replaced now by the weird noises + spinning). What would you guys do?? The more i listen to it the weirder it sounds. argg. Also, I swear it seems to take a split second longer to load songs sometimes now, is this just the obsessive worrying talking??
Anyway, i just wanted to run this past you guys first.
Thanks in advance
Shobo
BTW - The audio still sounds terrific, so no problems there

sorry for the longish post.
in short, all I want to know is whether or not your guys 5G iPODs make a audible click followed by 2-5 seconds of a vibrating "gravely" "crackly" sound when H/D spins.
I know there will always be some noise and crunching, I just wanna compare it w/ mine. Peace

Yep, it's on mine too. This is my THIRD iPod Video. I returned the first two because of the "clicking." I would have sworn as well that I did not hear the clicking for the first week of my first iPod. Then it showed up. I put the store models to my ear while exchanging it for the second time, and the stores floor models had the same click. I guess it's part of thunit.
Anyone NOT hearing the clicking?

I think the difference is the form factor. On the 4G iPods if you put it right up to your ear and change albums, you'll hear small clicks from the HD as well. My 60 GB does the same thing, but I've never confused these clicks with the "death click" when the head slips on the HD. There's an obvious difference, and the noise you hear from your iPod is no indication of malfunction or impending HD failure (well that's my diagnosis anyways). If you took off the case to your computer and dig some intensive tasks with large volumes of data, you'd probably hear similar sounds.

Ahhh, wheww, i feel better now. I guess i probably couldn't have heard the noise b/c of the many layers of saran wrap that I cocooned my Pod in before my screen protector arrived :) You do what you gotta do, no scratches to speak of!
ANyway, thanks for the replies guys, happy Poding
