Can not get updater, or see updates on PC

Hello,
New to the IPOD thing but it just can not be this difficult.
Please no "It works for me" responses ; Thanks!

I have a 20G IPOD that I am trying to update, and on my main computer, I can not get to the updates, as the comp does not see them for some reason. I have tried another computer, and can see them there but when I try to download the Updater, I get a security window, and then it gets blocked.

I have tried turning off every pop-up blocker that I can(including
those in Internet Explorer' security options), and nada.

I am at the end of the rope here.
what am I missing?
I am going to try and download from my friends comp and see what happens, if it works, I will be thoroughly dumbfounded, as I am fairly sharp in the comp/software department.

Would a wireless network, or McAfee, have anything to do with this ?
My friend can not help me figure this out either, as it's working on his comp.

Thanks in advance for any and all help

I don't understand what it is your trying to do. Your post is confusing.

Are you trying to download the iPod Updater and update the firmware on the iPod and it won't download?
-Turn off the McAfee. It might be other software that is causing the problem & this is one that could cause the problem. You may have to uninstall it and then reinstall it after the Updater downloads.

Confusing ? you can say that again..
I went to my uncles last night and it worked easily, as it should.
I get home last night and it works at my house as well(access granted).
It looks like it may have been something up w/ my Internet, or Apple's site, or a combo of the two, but I am not ruling out issues with my setup(McAfee etc ).

However, my second question is related to what you see when your IPOD is plugged into the computer, and your working on Itunes.
Right now everything works, but are you supposed to see everything your doing on the iPod, or just the flashing message of "do not disconnect". I was under the impression that everything I did in Itunes, while working with the iPod plugged in, would be instantly readable from the iPod itself, and it looks as though that is not the case.
Everything I do is working now, and transferring, so as they " don't F with it, if it works".
