80gb 5g iPOD - Question - Help??
I'm a current 4g 60gb iPod owner that is interested in upgrading to the 5g. My issue is everytime I've updated to the latest version the main driving factor has been that I was able to get more space on the hard drive.
I have a large music collection (well over 100gb). I've seen rumors and other website postings that Toshiba has developed an 80gb drive for the iPOD.
Can anyone tell me if this will be available soon in the 5g - within the next month or so.
I've read posts that the 5g has better overall sound production so that is clearly one reason to upgrade - I'm not into Photos or Videos so those enhancements don't interst me. BUT, I'd like to get the additional hard drive space.
Will this happen soon? Should I hold out for an 80gb? Or is that something that's not going to happen in the near term.
The Apple folks are clueless. As an example, I was looking at the iMac and asked if any upgraded models would be coming out and was told that nothing was in development - two weeks later they announced the new iMacs.........
Don't want to buy a 60gb only to have an 80gb (or larger) come out within weeks.
THANKS

They probably didn't know. Apple keeps product announcements secret.
Do not expect an 80 GB model for months, bare minimum. It would not surprise me if the 6G is still maximum of 60 GB because few people have that much music.

I defidently wouldn't say that because now with the video capability, more space will be needed.

They announced this several months ago - so I know the part is available to Apple. It's just a question of when do they implement it into the iPod?
Disc space will continue to grow with iPod releases, that's a foregone conclusion - I'm more interested in the timing of the releases?

you can't really blame the employees at the apple store about not telling you. first off, they're not gonna tell you 'hey a new imac's coming out, so save your money.' its bad business for apple. and second, i'm almost 99% sure that they don't know if apple's gonna introduce new products.
as far as 80gb 5G is concerned, i don't think you'll be seeing one till spring of 2006. they just released the 5G...

Apple don't want the price of the most expensive iPod to go over $400, or 300, so the larger hard disk WILL come out when they can retail it for this price with including the 80GB drive. Considering that they've had to drop so much for the 5G, it may be a while yet. When I got my mono4G you used to get a dock connector, FW and USB leads and a mains charger. Now you get the USB lead and that's it. But that's the price you pay to pay the same price I guess. I give it 3 months tops before the 80GB version comes out.

In january Apple is having a big convention thing again. Alot are saying that a dedicated ipod video will come out then. It would have a 60 and 80 gig options i'm sure. I agree with the above poster on apple not wanting to go more than $400.
There's a 100% chance that a 80 gig is in the future we just don't know when. I mean look at the 5 gig on generation ipod and now we're at 60 gig.
If your not happy with 60 gig then wait.
