How long before battery dies?

I will soon be a first time iPod user 5g 60gig and noticed that they will charge me $127 CAD, plus $10.77 CAD shipping to change my battery. Assuming the battery has the exact life span as it's predecessors how long should I expect my battery to last considering I will recharge it every night before going to sleep. I know that If my battery dies within my first year warranty deal I can get a battery change for free. Can I get my battery changed let's say 1 month before my warranty expires eventhough my battery is fine just so I wont have to worry about it for some time? Or does it have to be dead?

Anyone have had experience with changing the battery?
Should I get 2 year apple care ($87 CAD) instead of hoping for my battery to last for more than 2 years. But then If I do take apple care and don't need to change my battery it's $87 wasted.

Extended warranties are always a waste of money.

Check out these pages on the iPod battery type. You shouldn't really have to worry about the battery, most of the problems where with the very early models, and it's been over 2 years of battery development since then, with each model benefiting from the improvements in battery technology.

The battery will have to be not functioning as advertised for it to be replaced under warrenty.

If you are lucky, you won't have battery issues, if you aren't the battery will start acting up the magic number seems to be 18 months, but this is not the same for everyone.

There are many other personal options outside of the apple repair of batteries as well.
