Who wants to watch video files on an iPod?

Why? It's pointless. Love my ipod photo but if i was in the market for a new iPod, i'd hold off for a couple of months until something better comes along. Like many of the other posters have said...if I want to watch a video i'll watch it on my big screen tv.

Watching video on the ipod is going to eat away at the battery power as well. Something much better will be out soon and personally I think it's the worst looking of all the ipod gens.

It is pointless really, but then again some people can't stand to be away from a TV. I feel sorry for them really, as I'd much rather be out somewhere having a life. Plus if I want to watch TV, I'll do it on a screen I can actually see.

I lot of people are going to want to do this though, a friend of mine has just got a 3G phone and he has bought a movie on a flash memory card that he can watch on his phone (1.5" screen). If someone is prepared to do that, then the new iPod with it's 2.5" screen will apeal to some.

What would be impressive was if it had the ability to play this video on a TV, therefore you would have a portable video player capable of just playing to the on-board screen or a TV. I bit like the way the photo function currently works. This isn't unrealistic, as you can compress a DVD to fit a single CD with acceptable quality. I would even be prepared for this type of use to have to have mains power, in order to use the TV. And I would expect iTunes to ask if you want full TV size support when you put stuff on it. But it looks like the whole thing is just designed for the small screen. Pity really, as a link to a TV could have really been this Generation of iPod's unique selling point, as I don't see the PSP offering that.

I'm one of those that recently bought a 4G iPod. Thankfully, video on the move isn't really my thing, so it hasn't bugged me as much as it has with some peeps. Such a small screen isn't condusive to an enjoyable viewing experience ;)
Having said this, I would have a few concerns about buying the new iPod even if I was into the idea, the most notable of which would be the whole scratching issue that's plagued the Nano. The fascia for the new iPod looks like it's made from the self-same material as the Nano, subsequently it looks like the 5G will fall foul of the quality issues that we've all heard about with the Nano.
I've had a play with a Nano - and it does scratch up VERY easily - but it's primary use is for listening to music - so who cares? Watching video, though, and screen becomes a bit more of an issue. A colleague of mine has already played with the video iPod, and he reports that it shows up prints and scratches just like the Nano.
It could be fine, but I'd say that people should wait a few weeks before rushing out to buy one, just to check whether there is a problem.
Also, could this be why Apple is shipping these with cases?

i think its pretty ridiculous, and jobs is standing there talking about it like he's the first to ever conceive this idea. i've never been interested in PMP's so this new ipod gets a nice big yawn from me. man, i thought the price to gigabyte ratio was off before, i guess i'll shut up now.

Thank god the mere mortals have your pity.

I don't know why people are complaining! You're getting an iPod which is smaller, has a larger, higher resolution screen and 10GBs more space, for the same price as the iPod of yesterday. So what if you don't want to use it to watch video, some people might (ie aeroplanes!), but even still you're getting more for your money! Stop complaining and get on with these 'busy-no-need-for-tv-but-i-don't-mind-talking-about-ipods-online' lives that you're leading.

got to agree with this point, this is what everyone who is complaining about is missing. If the price of the new ipod was much higher to account for the increased in spec then the doubters have a right to whinge, however, all this extra spec for no extra money is a win win for the buyers....unless you like me who are recent buyers of the 60gb photo...

that's a feature...the new universal dock connects to TV's, and you can buy the remote to use as well.

Sure why not I will probably have some fun with at first ripping some of my favorite movies onto my 5g iPod and watch some scenes when I'm bored on the train/bus. I suspect it wont be the best movie watching experience ever though.

OT: Can you put eBooks and view them on the iPod?

Does it rescale video size on the fly, or will it only play video encoded using the iPod's screen dimensions?
ahdanielsan at 2007-11-15 12:55:44 >
# 11 Re: Who wants to watch video files on an iPod?
it keeps the scale. it wouldn't resize video unless you specified it to. i think..

that's fine for you, but some of us like to leave the house on occasion. Car trips, riding the bus or train to school/work. Sharing funny video clips with friends. Watching a favorite music video. etc.

Car Trips: I'm driving......If i'm a passenger i'm not going to be anti social and watch my tiny little iPod, however if i felt like watching a movie or clip in the car I would take my laptop.

Bus/Train: Couldn't imagine anything worse that watching something on a bus or train, especially on that tiny tiny screen. That's why I listen to music.

Sharing clips: Have my mobile for that.

You should all wait there will be something bigger and better out next year!!

# 15 Re: Who wants to watch video files on an iPod?
i want to buy a new ipod. i was happy to see that it had video capabilities but that wasn't the reason i decided to get it. i got it cos i wanted the best ipod on the market. the nano was cool but not enough storage space so i went with the next best thing... which was the new fifth gen ipod. the fact it can play video... a cool bonus, but most likely not something i'll use frequently. i'm glad i waited, cos two months ago i came close to buying the 20gb color ipod... and now for the same price... i get a smaller cooler ipod with video. awesome...

It's the same as asking who wants to listen iPod using headphones?

Funny you brought that up because my wife thinks the iPod is stupid with out it's own built in speakers! She thinks it's stupid to have to listen through headphones...

So... It has been asked ;) My answer of it's a personal portable music player didn't fly... Still that being said she'll let me buy a new iPod if I decide it's worth it. I'm waiting for the main review here before I make my final decisioin.

Video will just be something extra to play around with for me.

*sigh* I just got a 60GB colour bought for my birthday 4 weeks ago and she KNOWS that I would rather have had this new one :(

Still it's only features are video (wouldn't use) and better screen (don't care) better battery life (would love it) and no remote connector? (hate that) so I can convince myself quite easily I have the best one for me ... honest!

I definatly would watch videos on the iPod. :) That would be my only reason for buying the new iPod, which I don't plan to do just yet...

# 20 Re: Who wants to watch video files on an iPod?
Though I'm waiting for the hype to die down and the iLounge review to come out, I've almost got myself convinced for an upgrade from 3G.

Video - I'll bite and play, Better screen - want it, Better battery - want it, No remote connector - It only kills my airplay, which I have another transmitter to replace it with, and I never used the remote control, so it's not a deal breaker for me personally... Photos - I might actually start doing more with all my digital photos...

Now just to wait for the review to make sure this thing lives up to the potential hype... Not just for the video, but in general. The video will just be a play feature.
