Syncing
I am planning to get the new 5G 30GB iPod but I have one concern.
When I plug the new one into my computer's USB, when iTunes syncs with the new iPod, will it only update the iPod's empty drive, instead of erasing the songs already on my PC?
I am a bit worried as I don't have enough harddisk space to backup my mp3s.

NO. when you hook it up with computer, itunes will ask you two way which automatically manually sync. if you don't want to do automatically, just uncheck.

The iPod will never erase songs from your computer's hard drive.
Syncing of the iPod is one way. iTunes --> iPod, it is what is in iTunes that dictates what is on the iPod.
You will have the option during set up of a new iPod to decide if you want to do autosyncing or manual syncing.
